Rough Draft-10 points

Research Paper Topic/Proposal

Notes on Sources
Submit Online or In Class: For three sources (books, periodics or scholarly articles), provide notes that indicate you have begun to read and develop your ideas about the topic. You will need to bring them to class with you or submit them online; I will take a look at them and give you credit for turning them in, but you will keep possession of them. Please make certain to avoid plagiarism.
Here are some methods of note-taking; you may use any method that you prefer:
Note Cards- on 3”X5” cards (or larger) write out important notes, facts, statistics or quotes from your sources; make sure to write down the bibliographic information (author, title, etc), use page numbers by each set of information you take down, and remember to put quotation marks around direct quotes.
Notes-these may be typed or handwritten; as with the note cards, write out important data along with the page numbers and bibliographic information.
Print Outs-for most on-line information, you may want to provide a print-out of each page (try to look for a special print button that will remove any unwanted material). You will have all of the on-line information, but you will need to annotate (highlight, underline) and add notes on to the page that indicates you have read through and have decided what information will be useful and how.
Note format examples are available online in the Research Paper folder.

Research Paper Annotated Bibliography
Submit Online: You will need to find three sources (books, scholarly journals, on-line sources-and these may be the same sources as the Research Paper notes) for the annotated bibliography and provide both a complete MLA format citation and a brief paragraph that explains to the reader the content, relevance, accuracy and quality of the source and how you might use it in your research paper. It should be typed, MLA format, and, depending on the length of your annotations, one to two pages in length. For the final draft of the research paper, you will not use the annotated bibliography; instead, you will use a works cited page that lists all the sources you have used in MLA format. The additional page that follows, also explains in more depth what an annotated bibliography is, how to prepare one, and what it looks like.
Here is one example from the Cornell University Library (there is a link to it in the Research Paper folder):
Waite, Linda J., et al. “Nonfamily Living and the Erosion of Traditional Family Orientations Among Young Adults.” American Sociological Review, vol. 51, no. 4, 1986, pp. 541-554.
The authors, researchers at the Rand Corporation and Brown University, use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that nonfamily living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans, and expectations, moving them away from their belief in traditional sex roles. They find their hypothesis strongly supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males. Increasing the time away from parents before marrying increased individualism, self-sufficiency, and changes in attitudes about families. In contrast, an earlier study by Williams cited below shows no significant gender differences in sex role attitudes as a result of nonfamily living.
(taken from Cornell University)
Your annotated bibliography may be single-spaced (please double-space the MLA entry); you will not use it in the final draft.

Research Paper Organization-Some notes:
For the purposes of this research paper, you will need to work on how you want to organize the paper. There are three distinct parts, but these are not to be discussed equally. You need to include a section that gives background about the argument/controversy (possibly a paragraph or two at the most), a section that makes an argument about why the topic you chose is the most important issue in America and its ramifications for the country—this section should be at least 4 to 5 paragraphs (or more) and should be the substantial bulk of the essay, and a section that proposes some possible solutions to the problem that might prevent future issues—this section may be a paragraph or two. In addition, you will need to add an introduction and conclusion
Research Paper Outline
Submit online: For the research paper, you will want to develop either a scratch outline or a more formal outline of what you will write for your essay. This will help you to write the paper more effectively and efficiently. If you have trouble developing an outline, try beginning to write the outline and develop it from there. For more information and examples visit Blackboard.

Research Paper Rough Draft
At this point, you should begin to write the essay and bring a good quality rough draft with you to class on the due date; it should be about half the finished length, approximately four to five pages, typed, in MLA format, and with a works cited page listing all the sources you will be using in the essay. Please bring two copies with you to class for peer revision.

Research Paper Final Draft
The Final Draft should be typed, double-spaced, in MLA format, 6-8 pages (1800-2400 words) in length, with a works cited page (should be the last page of your essay), listing all sources used-you should have 4-8 total sources for the finished research paper. Grading will be completed in class during individual conferences. The final draft must be submitted to UnPlag for English 100 or SafeAssign for English 101 to receive credit for the assignment.
