Read the scenarios below to inform the assignment that follows.
Adriana, age 5
Adriana is a kindergartener. She comes from a single parent household with three siblings. Her mother works at a local fast food establishment. Recently, Adriana has displayed aggressive behavior, usually on Mondays after having spent a weekend with her father. Adriana does not talk unless spoken to and she does not willingly share activities from her day during circle time. Adriana struggles with making friends and would prefer to play alone. When asked what her name is, she will only state her first name. During lunch, Adriana will only eat with her fingers. Adriana rarely shows emotion.
Tom, age 4
Tom is a 4-year-old in an early childhood preschool program, has both parents at home, and is the only child. His family is Muslim and Tom has not been vaccinated due to their family’s religious beliefs. Tom’s family is wealthy and very involved in his education. He is not potty-trained, he does not dress himself, and he prefers to play alone. Tom does not know his colors and he can count to 10 using his fingers, but he is unable to hold a writing utensil or draw a picture.
Within the context of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, choose one of the above scenarios and address the following in a 500-750 word essay:
Identify indicators that show a delay in development in comparison to typical development. Rationalize your choices.
Address the role that culture and environment may have played in the development of the child and the influence they may have played in possible delays.
