The legal system has evolved with many expectations over the past 20 years. In some ways for the better but in other ways it has made it more difficult to serve students with suspected special needs or documented. Since I began the IEP has gone from about 3 pages to on average 30 pages. We do focus more on transition now which has been a great change. As a service provider we definitely focus on least restrictive environment which has made teachers learn new methodologies. Unfortunately most general education teachers only have to take one special education class in college. This does not prepare them for the many needs of their students. Behavior strategies and techniques are so very important.
Private and parochial schools are supervised by me for our district. We are required to have a timely and meaningful meeting once a year to discuss how funding will be provided to those students. For next year Pikeland has $1,573 dollars to spend which is nothing. We provide evaluation and consultation services for private/parochial students expect for speech which is direct. Our services are financially based according to the law. I send letters to all known parents at the beginning of the year to fulfill our child find requirements for private and parochial students.
