The Importance of Integrity
The values that Marcus seems to hold are his responsibility to his daughter. It is obvious that he cares about her quite a bit. He seems to be a lot less concerned with the obvious disvalue, which is theft and the lack of integrity. This situation brings up some interesting questions for us to analyze. The first of those is: does integrity matter in the face of large companies? Another is: does responsibility to family overcome honesty? In response to question one, (does integrity matter in the face of large companies?) Marcus believes that integrity does not matter when dealing with large companies. His reasons are simple. He believes that no one would ever notice his actions, and that the company would waste those same items anyway. In response to question two, (does responsibility to family overcome honesty?) Marcus believes that the responsibility he has as a father is more important to him than his honesty/ integrity at work. His reasons are that he does not want to let down his daughter, who he loves very much, and he wants her to view him as someone reliable and trustworthy. I personally agree with some of his reasoning, but not all. I believe that integrity is very important, however I also agree that if the action will not directly effect or harm someone else then it is more or less okay to so. Large companies are also typically wasteful, as stated by Marcus, so I don’t think it would be wrong to use those soon to be wasted resources for the good of a family member.
