ENG 130 Module Three: Summaries, Quotes, and Paraphrases
In this assignment, you will continue working with the text you chose for the project by summarizing, quoting, paraphrasing, and using in-text citations. Specifically, this assignment will prepare you to summarize details of the text that are relevant to the core idea and support your analysis of the core idea with quoted and paraphrased evidence from the text. You will continue to develop these skills in future assignments as you prepare to complete your project.
Directions
For this assignment, you will first write a brief summary of the text. Next, you will choose a sentence from the text and incorporate it as a quote in an originally crafted sentence of your own. Then, you will take the same sentence and incorporate it as a paraphrase. This assignment will help you practice summarizing information and also integrating a direct quote and a paraphrase, in the same way you will integrate these into your project. Keep in mind that these skills are intended to build on your own writing, in that you will use a summary, quote, or paraphrase to support a point of analysis you make about the text in your project. For this week, however, just focus on practicing summarizing, quoting, and paraphrasing. Ensure you use in-text citations throughout the assignment. You are encouraged to review the Module Guide for information about how to frame a quote or paraphrase within your own writing. Complete this assignment using the template linked in the What to Submit section.
Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
Summary: Write a brief summary of the text chosen for the project. Focus on providing a high-level overview of the information that the author shares, as you understand it.
Your summary should be three or four sentences long.
Quote: Incorporate one sentence directly from the text as a quote in an original sentence.
Paraphrase: Incorporate a sentence from the text as a paraphrase in an original sentence that restates the author’s ideas clearly and communicates an interpretation of the author’s intended meaning.
Focus on restating the author’s ideas in your own words. What do you think the author is trying to say in this quote? Share this in the paraphrase.
In-Text Citations: Use in-text citations throughout the assignment to properly cite the writer’s ideas according to APA or MLA standards.
Use either APA or MLA standards to properly cite the writer’s ideas in your summary as well as in the sentences where you quoted and paraphrased the writer’s work.
What to Submit
Use the Module Three Written Response Template to create your Module Three Written Response and submit it for grading. Although you will refer to your selected text in your assignment, you will not refer to any sources from outside this course.

I am also including the discussion topic I used
For my Module Two project, I chose the article “Social Media and Mental Health: How Online Habits Affect Stress and Self-Esteem.”
The first audience I chose for my analysis essay is high school students (grades 9–12). This audience makes sense because teens are on social media every day, and a lot of them don’t realize how it can affect their mood, sleep, confidence, and stress levels. I chose them because the ideas in the article could actually help them make better choices, like setting limits, unfollowing negative accounts, or taking breaks when they feel overwhelmed. If students understand how social media can impact mental health, they can use that information to protect themselves, build healthier habits, and feel less pressure to compare their lives to others online. My analysis could change the way they think about scrolling and posting more like a tool they control instead of something controlling them.
The second audience I chose for my revised analysis essay is parents/guardians of teenagers. I chose this audience because parents often see the effects (attitude changes, anxiety, sleep problems) but may not understand what is actually happening online. This audience needs the ideas so they can talk to their kids in a supportive way instead of just saying “get off your phone.” They can use the information to set realistic boundaries, encourage balance, and watch for signs that social media is negatively affecting their child. I think my writing could help parents feel more prepared and less frustrated, and it could help families communicate better about technology.
