Disinfectant Protocols and Guidelines Exam-Room Cleaning
Examination tables should be cleaned between each use.
If patient had excessive shedding or nail/fur trim completed in room, the room should be properly “dryˮ-cleaned (sweeping, wiping with cloth, etc.) to remove debris between each use.
If room has animal blood exposure onto surfaces, these surfaces must be disinfected. “Wetˮ-clean surfaces with hospital disinfectant products.
At the end of the day, all rooms should receive a complete dry and wet clean. This includes floors, chairs, exam tables and counters. Allow wet areas to air dry – contact time with disinfectants is key to killing microorganisms.
Cage Cleaning (non-isolation)
A “wetˮ-clean is ALWAYS required between patients. All surfaces of cage (floor, ceiling, sides, bars, etc.) should be properly disinfected and scrubbed, if necessary.
Ideally, allow areas to air-dry. Disinfectant products require at least 5 minute wet contact time to kill microorganisms.
General Hospital Cleaning
“Dryˮ-clean surfaces (e.g., sweeping, wiping with disposable microfiber cloth) to remove loose debris, hair, etc.
“Wetˮ-clean surfaces with disinfectants. Floors should be mopped and surfaces scrubbed, if necessary.

Procedure
Before entering Isolation area, remove any outerwear (e.g. lab coat) and any equipment (e.g. stethoscope, pens/pencils, watch, cell phone, etc.) and leave outside the isolation room.
⚠ Once items enter the isolation room/unit, they CANNOT leave to be later introduced to other patients
Gather any supplies needed to take into isolation before putting on PPE (personal protective equipment).
Wash hands or use alcohol-based hand rub.
The following PPE should be worn before entering unit:
Booties
Gloves
Mask (if applicable)
Enter isolation. APPLY GOWN. Attend to patient in isolation as needed, being as careful as possible that protective coverings only come in contact with patient and excrements.
Clean and disinfect any equipment used while caring for patient.
Before leaving isolation room, remove PPE
Practice Disinfectant Protocols 5
a Remove gown. If not soiled, hang INSIDE isolation area. Gowns may be re- used with the same patient. If soiled, throw away.
b Remove booties. As each bootie is removed, place shoe into prepared bleach bath at exit. Repeat with other bootie. Dispose of gloves and step out of isolation room. Avoid contact with eternal portions of the door and entrance when exiting the isolation room.
📌 All PPE disposable material should be placed in trash container lined with a biohazard bag in the isolation room.
Wash hands with soap and water. Disinfect any surfaces (e.g. doorknobs) that may have been accidentally contaminated.
📌 Mop pathway in which pet entered the hospital and exited the hospital ASAP
If there are no booties available, create a foot bath to be used after exiting infected room as to not track anything on our shoes to rest of hospital,
Otherwise, if pet is panting or coughing in room, can consider wiping down the walls as well as the floor
If tech/doctor is wearing facial mask in exam room, change masks so it does not act like a fomite
