During the past few weeks, you have had the opportunity to develop a plan for success as a student here at GCU and beyond graduation. Use the attached document titled “Reflection” to complete the assignment.
APA style is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.
This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. A link to the LopesWrite technical support articles is located in Class Resources if you need assistance.
Topic 4 Purpose Plan: Academic, Spiritual, & Career Plan
Directions: For this assignment, you will answer a series of questions designed to help you find and plan your purpose. These questions are broken into an Academic Plan, a Spiritual Plan, and a Career Plan. Please respond to each of the questions directly on this document (the boxes will expand as needed) and then answer the two reflection questions at the end of the document.
Academic Plan
To help you get the most out of your GCU experience, GCU offers support, services, and resources that enhance your academic pursuits. Find your major and program on the following website https://www.gcu.edu/degree-programs and complete the table below:
In which program of study are you enrolled, or plan to enroll?
I am currently enrolled in the UNV-303 University Success Course. This class teaches important skills for college.
What are some of the program core courses you are looking forward to taking and why?
I look forward to learning time management and SMART goal planning. These will help me stay organized and reach my goals step by step. I also want to learn how to do personal finance planning so I can manage my money better.
Which courses do you anticipate being the most challenging? Explain why.
Writing an annotated bibliography might be hard. It takes time and I am still learning how to research and write the right format. I might also struggle with learning how to do APA style, which makes me nervous. But I am ready to keep trying until I understand it.
Spiritual Plan
GCU is committed to integrating faith across all aspects of the GCU community. This stems from GCU’s mission to educate students from a Christian perspective and to prepare them for careers that honor God while serving others. Read about GCU’s “One Foundation,” including the “Ethical Positions Statement” and “Doctrinal Statement,” and watch the video “One Foundation: Integration of Faith, Learning, and Work” located at https://www.gcu.edu/why-gcu/christian-identity-and-mission.
After clicking on the link, scroll down to read about GCU’s “One Foundation,” including the “Ethical Positions Statement” and “Doctrinal Statement. Then click play to watch the “One Foundation: Integration of Faith, Learning, and Work” video.
What did you take-away from these videos? How can you apply this to your experience while at GCU? (50-100 words)
I learned that GCU wants students to follow God in school, at work, and in life. They want students to live like Jesus by being kind, honest, and helping others. The video showed that faith is not just for Sundays, but for every day. At GCU, I will try to be a good student who learns well and respects others. I will pray when I feel stressed and ask God for help. I will also try to work in a way that makes God proud.
What does service outside of the classroom mean to you? How can you apply service while at GCU? (50-100 words)
Service outside the classroom means helping people without getting paid or earning a grade. It means caring for others and giving your time to do good things. At GCU, I can do this by joining service clubs, helping with food drives, or going on mission trips. I am available to provide tutoring or support whenever my classmates need assistance. My service to others brings me closer to God while helping me stop being selfish. I want to serve with purity of heart while demonstrating God’s love through my actions to others.
Career Plan
Grand Canyon University offers several career service tools to help you discover potential career paths, build a resume, search for employment, and more. Take a few minutes to take the Career Compass survey located at https://www.focus2career.com/Portal/Register.cfm?SID=810 (Access Code: Purpose).
You can watch the video below to assist you with the registration process: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnvvHOt5LvE8yBMYeHV4mGPW88Q86ftmw.
Even if you have completed an assessment such as this in the past, it is good to reassess yourself every so often to reevaluate your goals, focus, and direction based on your growth.
After you complete the survey, fill in the following table.
Research the details of your Career Compass results, and then describe at least three job descriptions.
1. Sociology Professor: Teaches about society, culture, and human behavior. They conduct research and write papers about social situations and how people exist in communities.
2. Social Worker: Dedicated their efforts to assisting individuals dealing with poverty, abuse, neglect, or mental health issues by connecting them to services and providing emotional support for life improvements. They serve as bridges to essential services while offering emotional support to help people achieve better life outcomes.
3. Counselor: Provide therapy sessions with people to explore their feelings, problems, or life choices. Listen, offer support, and help clients find healthier ways to deal with stress, grief, or personal struggles.
Based on your results, what surprises did you find? If there are none, explain why. (100-150 words)
There were no big surprises in my results. I have a natural inclination to help others and excel at listening to people. I take pleasure in conversing with others while seeking opportunities to help them achieve positive change. All three of the careers fit my personality very well. I am social, kind, and a keen listener so these jobs make sense for me. This survey helped me feel more confident about choosing a career when I can serve others and stay connected to my values.
After completing your current program/degree, what is your plan? (grad school, internship, career plan, etc.)
My plan after finishing my program includes working in a field where I directly interact with people. I want to obtain work experience through internship positions or entry-level positions. I will pursue graduate studies to enhance my qualifications and certifications after my initial work experience. This will help me grow in my career and help more people.
Reflection
Review Chapters 4 and 7 of the University Success Guide for assistance in answering both of the reflection questions below.
Reflection Question 1: In 100 – 125 words, please respond to the following prompt:
In order to achieve the goals in your purpose plan, you will need to employ self- management and self-leadership strategies. What self- management and self-leadership strategies do you plan on using, and how will you use them?
I will develop disciplined organizational skills that will control my actions toward reaching my desired targets. I will create a daily schedule that includes time for studying, homework, and rest. I will minimize my time spent on social media and video games. I plan to follow my schedule precisely while maintaining my academic progress. I will also lead myself by thinking positive and not giving up when things are hard. I know college is not easy, but if I stay focused, I can do it. I will check my progress every week to see what is working and change what is not. By following these little steps, I will accomplish my major objectives.
Reflection Question 2: In 100 – 125 words, please respond to the following prompt:
GCU provides many opportunities and resources to help you accomplish the goals in your purpose plan. What are some GCU opportunities and/or resources you will engage in to help you accomplish your goals?
GCU has a lot of great tools to help me succeed. One thing I will use is the online tutoring. If I do not understand something in class, I can ask for help. I also plan to watch Chapel online to help me stay strong in my faith. That gives me peace and motivation. I will contact Student Affairs both for academic assistance and emotional support. Joining a student club is my goal because I want to meet fellow students and participate in the school community. The support provided by GCU will enable me to stay focused and build confidence as I work toward my goals.
