Topic Proposal
In this activity you will choose the topic for your Psychology Project. This must be a topic of interest to you that is related to a cultural behavior or process that can be explained based on the principles of psychology.
NOTE: For the topic of your project you must choose a human behavior determined by culture. Do not select a theory, therapy, psychologist, person, etc.
(a) First, read the instructions for ALL nine Learning Activities for this project (see syllabus).
(b) Second, look through the class textbook and choose three potential topics that you might be interested in.
(c) Third, do a quick library search to find journal articles related to all three topics. Search only for primary sources. Determine which of the topics will provide the most material and opportunity for the best project. From this research, select one topic. Use only primary sources.
You will be researching psychological theories, therefore, you will need to consider what scholarly work has been done in the field on your topic. You must use professional, peer reviewed journal articles to support your work. The rigors of a research project demand that you include only primary sources, which must be current journal articles from acceptable journals. The library can help you do a literature search for primary sources for your project, just ask a librarian for help.
(d) Then post your selected topic for approval by the instructor. Include the following information in your post (no attachments):
(Number the questions. Do not include the questions.)
- The definition of your chosen topic. Briefly explain your topic.
- The reason why this topic is relevant and important in the field of the psychology of culture.
- A brief description of the resources you found during your library search.
- Any questions you may have about the project (NOT about your topic).
(Please number the questions as above but do not include the questions.)

Weekly Participation
To receive full credit for participation each student must post three times in each discussion forum: the original primary post (by day 3) and two responses to other students’ posts in each forum (by day 6) for a total of three posts per discussion forum.
Note: To maximize the benefit of their own learning, students are strongly encouraged to post often and frequently, beyond these minimum requirements.
(1) Discussion Question – 3 posts – Answer the discussion questions about the weekly readings.
(2) Research Concept – 3 posts – Find a study to explain the research topic of the week.
(3) Closing Summary – 1 post – Write a concluding post to summarize your learning for the week. (Note: This forum does not require replies to your classmates.)
To receive credit for your participation all posts must be substantive. To be considered substantive, all posts must be at least 100 words. This word count does NOT include repeating the question, repeating what has already been said, your signature, salutations, or references.
In addition, all posts in every discussion forum must meet the following requirements to be considered substantive:
– Answer the question in full. Thoroughly answer ALL parts of the question.
– Give specific examples of how to apply the class concepts and topics.
– Support your ideas by using examples directly from the weekly readings.
– Do NOT include direct quotes. Explain everything in your own words.
– Include APA formatted reference(s).
– Do not praise or state agreement. Do not say “I agree” or “I like” or state any other direct form of agreement or praise.
– Write in short paragraphs. Do not write long blocks of text. Separate your answer into brief sections. Use headings to label each separate section of your posts.
– You must stay on topic. All your posts must focus only on the psychological aspects of cultural behaviors.
– To receive credit your answers must directly address the psychological issues related to the discussions. Other related issues may be important or interesting to discuss, but will not receive credit in this class. Some examples are: social, personal, financial, legal, medical, ethical, or any other issues not specific to or directly related to the topic of the class.
– Do not use or include any references that are not from the field of psychology.
– For references you must use ONLY primary psychology sources: scholarly books and/or peer reviewed journal articles, related to psychology.
– Secondary or tertiary sources are not acceptable for academic research and referencing, and are NOT to be used for this class, such as:
Magazines, newspapers, encyclopedias, dictionaries, wikipedia, other wikis, blogs, non-scholarly websites or any non-scientific sources that do not provide quality researched materials (any source that does not use credible sources to support the information in the document).
Cultural Psychology Project
In this class you will work on one project composed of nine parts. Each part is a separate learning activity with weekly deadlines.
The Psychology Project is an ongoing research project. Your project must be completely based on the published literature. Do not include opinions, comments, or experiences. You will need to consult the library every week. Remember to ask a librarian for help often with your research.
First, think of a topic of interest to you within the field of cultural psychology. Think of a behavior that humans perform related to culture or as a result of their culture.
The focus of your project will be to explain the psychological aspects of one cultural behavior .
You will learn different aspects of your topic as you work on it every week, with the goal of preparing a presentation for your classmates towards the end of the course, to teach them and share with them what you have learned about the psychology of your chosen topic.
First, read now the instructions for all the learning activities and using the library, begin to research your topic. You may consult your instructor if you have questions.
Every part of the project must be in full APA format. Spelling and grammar do count. Please use the services of the writing center before you turn your assignments in, to correct all mistakes and improve your writing.
Direct quotes are not allowed. You must explain everything in your own words.
This must be an original project from beginning to end. Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will receive a grade of zero. You should never copy anything from any source at any time. Everything you include must be written in your own words only.
Please refer to the APA files in the Course Materials link in the classroom. Every assignment you write for this class must be in full APA format.
LATE ASSIGNMENTS
All assignments are due by 11:59 PM on the due date. You will receive a one point penalty if the assignment is one day late (within 24 hours of the due date, must be posted by 11:59 the day after the due date) and a two point penalty if the assignment is two day late (within 24-48 hours of the due date, must be posted by 11:59). No assignment will be accepted if it is more than two days late.
No exceptions will be made to this policy so please do not ask for any extensions.
– Please strive to have all your assignments turned in on time so that you may receive full credit for your work. Technological issues are not considered valid grounds for late assignment submission. Also please keep in mind that travel, work demands, childcare issues, health, family or personal issues, or computer problems are not acceptable excuses for late work. No exceptions will be made to this policy for assignments more than two days late.
– No assignment will be accepted after the last day of the term. Assignments submitted after the last day of class will not be accepted. No incomplete grades will be granted.
– Discussion Forums: You will only receive credit for posting during the assigned week for each discussion. Anything posted before the actual course week begins or after it ends, will not count and will not be graded.

Late Registration
Students who register during the first week of the term, during late registration, will already be one week behind. Students who fall into this category are expected to catch up with all of Week #1 and Week #2's work by the end of Week #2. No exceptions, since two weeks constitutes a significant percentage of the term's lessons. Students who do not feel they can meet this deadline should not enroll in the class. If they have registered, they should see their registrar, academic adviser, GoArmyEd or Military Education officer to discuss their options. Also note that late registration may mean you do not receive your book in time to make up the work you missed in Week #1. Not having your book on the first day of class is not an excuse for late work after the deadlines in the Course Schedule.
Incomplete Grade Policy
Missing any part of the Course Schedule may prevent completion of the course. If circumstances will prevent the student from completing the course by the end of the term, the student should complete a request for an incomplete grade. Note: A grade of incomplete or “INC” is not automatically assigned to students, but rather must be requested by the student by submitting a Petition for and Work to Remove an Incomplete Grade Form. Requests for an incomplete grade must be made on or before the date of the final assignment or test of the term. The form will not be available after the last day of the term. A grade of “INC” does not replace an “F” and will not be awarded for excessive absences. An “INC” will only be awarded to student presenting a valid case for the inability to complete coursework by the conclusion of the term. It is ultimately the instructor’s decision to grant or deny a request for an incomplete grade, subject to the policy rules below. Policy/Rules for granting an Incomplete (INC). An incomplete cannot be issued without a request from the student. To qualify for an incomplete, the student must:
· Have completed over 50% of the course material and have a documented reason for requesting incomplete (50% means all assignments/exams up to and including the mid-term point, test, and/or assignments.)
· Be passing the course at the time of their request.
If both of the above criteria are not met an incomplete cannot be granted.
An INC is not a substitute for an “F”. If a student has earned an “F” by not submitting all the work or by receiving an overall “F” average, then the “F” stands.
TROY Email
All students were required to obtain and use the TROY email address that is automatically assigned to them as TROY students. All official correspondence (including bills, statements, emails from instructors and grades, etc.) will be sent ONLY to the troy.edu (@troy.edu) address.
All students are responsible for ensuring that the correct email address is listed in the classroom by the beginning of Week One. Email is the only way the instructor can, at least initially, communicate with you. It is your responsibility to make sure a valid email address is provided. Failure on your
