NATS 1840A RESEARCH PRESENTATION ASSIGNMENT Due: July 17, 2024; August 7th, 2024 • This assignment consists of two parts: an annotated bibliography and subsequent creation/presentation. The annotated bibliography is to be submitted in advance of the final presentation. The topic of the presentation must be chosen from a prepared list. • The final creation/presentation can be in one of several formats described below. • The annotated bibliography is to be submitted online through the appropriate assignment link on eClass by no later than 9am on Wednesday, July 17th 2024. • The completed final presentation is to be submitted online through the appropriate assignment link on eClass by no later than 9am on Wednesday, August 7th 2024. INSTRUCTIONS Prepare a research presentation on a topic picked from the choices available on eClass. Topics are grouped into four categories: • Agriculture • Great Lakes “Areas of Concern” • Energy Technology & Resources • Historical Marine Oil Spills Each category and topic comes with more specific guidance that is provided within the topic selection activity. But you are otherwise free to focus on a specific aspect or central idea within those guidelines. (Other topics that are not on the list may be approved at the Course Director’s discretion. Any such request must be made prior to July 12th, 2024.) The work requested of you is an informative (or “expository”) presentation. Unlike an argumentative or persuasive presentation, an expository piece maintains a neutral stance on a subject and aims to present a balanced and objective description of a topic. The primary goal is to educate the audience about the topic. You can obtain more information and guidance concerning expository writing from a variety of Internet sites, including this one and this one. These websites are geared to essay writing, but the broad principles described NATS 1840A therein may still help you to structure your non-essay presentation. 1 Your presentation may take the form of any one of the following • Flyer/pamphlet (up to three pages, front and back) • Powerpoint presentation (up to 20 slides) • Audio podcast (7 min. max) • Video presentation (7 min. max) • Interactive website (must have a thought-out navigation structure and include multiple elements such as photos, videos, social media, and external links in support of the main text; must not be just a page of text) Flyers and pamphlets should be submitted as pdf files. Powerpoint presentations should be submitted as .ppt or .pptx files (or as a pdf file) and should ideally be self-running once loaded. Audio podcasts are expected to be in standard mp3 format and the voice must be your own (no machine-generated narration will be accepted). Videos should be submitted as mp4 and any narration must similarly by your own voice (but you don’t have to show your face). Websites can be built on any hosting site (eg. Google Sites or Wix) and should be submitted as the corresponding URL. Alternatively, a website can be submitted as a .zip archive containing all of the files needed to make the website work when a browser is pointed to the index.html file in the zip archive. In all cases, make sure that any materials used (images, etc.) can be used by you without violating copyright. Prior to submitting your presentation, you must submit an annotated bibliography following the style you have already produced twice in this course. This is the stage at which you will consider and develop what you intend to be the central idea of your presentation and decide what information will be needed to advance that idea. The annotated bibliography is to be handed in by July 17. Only after you have completed the annotated bibliography should you proceed to create your presentation. The specific expectations of this research assignment are as follows: i) Focus on the facts of the chosen topic and sub-topics as you can determine them from scholarly and other reputable sources. You will be graded based on how informative your presentation is to the reader. As indicated above, you should not argue a position or express an opinion on controversial subjects related to your topic. But you can (and should) describe any such controversies. ii) Your presentation should be prepared with an audience of your peers (other NATS students) in mind. You will also be graded on the level of organization and communication effectiveness of your presentation. Highlight the science of the topic, but avoid 1 Publishing of these links should not be interpreted as a blanket endorsement of either site’s business. The course director has no connections to either site or any other related conflict of interest. NATS 1840A unnecessary jargon. When unfamiliar terms and concepts are introduced be sure to explain them to the reader. iii) Because your aim is to teach the audience, aim to make your presentation sufficiently interesting that they will want to continue engaging with it. iv) Your presentation should adhere to the time/size limits indicated above. v) The three most important references used should be indicated (title, authors, date) in all visual presentations (but don’t need to take up much space). A brief (30 second) similar list should be included as part of an audio podcast. Alternatively, references can be mentioned within the main narration itself (e.g. “… a recent article in Nature by Smith & Jones claims that…”).
