Organizational Ethical Standards
LEAD6113 Module 1 Assignment
Organizational Ethical Standards, Part 1: Ethical Values Statement
An ethical values statement provides a high-level overview of the guiding principles informing ethical decision-making within an organization. This formal declaration is typically developed for and used with an internal audience.
In this assignment, you will create a 1-page ethical values statement outlining 4-5 values.
Note: Envision yourself as a leader in an organization tasked with cultivating an ethical culture. Over 5 weeks, you will develop ethical standards for your organization. This week, you create an ethical values statement for internal stakeholders.
Step 1
Select an organization. It may be an organization you are familiar with or one you are interested in learning more about.
Research the organization’s background to appraise its ethical framework.
Evaluate its mission and vision.
Assess any existing ethical codes.
Survey its recent activities.Analyze its background. Use the following questions to guide your analysis:
What current problems does the organization face? Choose one to focus on for this assignment.
What decisions has the organization made to solve the problem?
What values do these decisions reveal?
Are these values ethical? Why or why not?
Are these values aligned with the organization’s mission, vision, and standards? How or how not?
What is the effect of the current values and decisions?Tip: Many organizations name ethics in mission and/or vision statements. They may not have a separate ethics or values statement. You may learn about an organization’s activities by searching for internal blog posts and reports or external news articles and reports.
Step 2
Review the course readings and video presentations and conduct additional research using the ACE LibraryLinks to an external site.. Select at least two scholarly sources related to organizational values, mission and vision statements, ethics statements, and ethical theories.
Synthesize your scholarly evidence with your notes on the organization’s background to identify 4-5 values critical to ethical decision-making that align with the organization’s mission and vision. Use the following questions to guide your thinking:
How are values enacted in ethical theories? Can you use an ethical theory to justify your selected values?
How will your selected values improve decision-making?
How will your selected values cultivate ethical culture?
How will your values support the organization’s goals?Time-Sensitive Preview: In Module 2, you will develop and distribute a survey to five individuals soliciting feedback on your ethical values. These individuals can be peers, colleagues, friends, and leaders. A mixture of individuals with varied organizational experience and leadership levels will provide a robust sampling. This is only a scenario, so they do not need to work at your selected organization. Select and connect with the survey recipients ahead of time to ensure timely feedback.
Step 3
Download the Ethical Values Statement Template. Use the template to organize your identified values into a formal ethical values statement for the organization you selected.
Note: Your finished assignment should look like something used in the workplace. Instead of an APA-formatted essay, it should mirror an authentic, evidence-based ethical values statement with APA-formatted in-text citations and a reference list. You do not need an APA-formatted title page.?
Ensure the values reflect your organization’s unique context and specify the alignment in your statement.
Use APA formatted in-text citations to support your statement. Include your sources in an APA-formatted reference section.
Tip: You are sharing a wealth of information with your organization in your statement; it is a leader’s job to simplify complex information. Use headings and bulleted lists to guide your readers’ eyes through the information. Use clear and approachable language to ensure readers understand and remember the values.
Step 4
Submit your ethical values statement as a Word document.
Please read the Assignment GuidelinesLinks to an external site. before you begin working.
DISCUSSION MOD 1
Ethical Leadership Practice
We often consider ethics as a set of static character traits. But Aristotle defined ethics as a practice. It’s a state of being bound to relationships. As a result, ethical leaders inhabit many qualities and leadership styles.
Reflect on the course readings and video presentations to develop an original response to the following questions:
What moral values and ethical considerations differ for effective leadership versus effective management?
What are the key challenges and limitations in current leadership research related to ethics and leadership effectiveness?
APA citations are required only for the initial response and should be limited to the assigned module readings.
Class/ACE Expectations
Writing Expectations
Regarding written assignments, please note that all work should adhere to APA format and style. All papers require an appropriately formatted title page, an abstract, headings, citations, sources, and an appropriately formatted Reference page. APA assistance is available through the 7th edition of the APA Manual, which is a must for all doctoral students in my opinion, through ACE resources, and through online resources like Purdue Owl.
Regarding proofreading and errors which do not reflect scholarly work, please make all efforts to minimize errors or to catch them through proofreading. We all have our own way of proofreading; I find it effective to read my work out loud to myself. A great resource, free, is Grammarly which will proof and offer recommendations.
As you progress in the program and with your dissertation work it is important to strive to use best practices to meet the high standard expected of doctoral work.
At the doctoral level, higher level writing is an expectation. Some quick tips:
do not beginning sentences with numbers
have a transitional paragraph of 3-5 sentences between heading levels
have paragraphs of 3 to 5 sentences
use the Words to Avoid list in the Dissertation Style and Manuscript Organization which begins on page 3.
Avoid pronouns
Tables and figures are discussed and in APA format
There are options available for students:
Grammarly is a free app students can use to catch grammar. https://www.grammarly.com/ (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.
The Writing Center at ACE is a wonderful resource for students to get individualized help based on ACE expectations.
Each week I will post a Welcome announcement with Assignment Tips and also post in the Instructor’s Studio.
Unless otherwise noted in the Weekly Announcement each assignment should have the following:
Separate title page.
An Abstract.
Separate Reference page. References should be current – less than 5 years old unless addressing a historical aspect.
Headings for each section of the paper.
Participation
Discussion Guidelines – Doctoral Level
Please make one original post, which must include a citation from at least one source. Respond to a minimum of two classmates to move the discussion forward. Scholars are not required to provide a cited source in the responses to peers.
APA citations are only required for the original post.
Original Post is due by Thursday 11:59 PM.
First and second responses to peers by Saturday 11:59 PM.
All criteria and due dates must be met to receive full credit.

Notes:
When posting, double-spacing, hanging indents, and italics ARE REQUIRED in your submitted assignments in Word documents and similar file types.
Scholars are not required to use hanging indents in the discussions.
If your source has a doi (Digital Object Identifier), it should be included.
The Web has many resources about APA; confirm that a source is referencing the 7th edition. The APA Web site itself offers free tutorials, each of about 20 minutes: http://www.apastyle.org/learn/tutorials/index.aspx (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.Links to an external site.
Some key points regarding the issues of plagiarism and quoting;
It is important to not over quote in your work in class or as you proceed through your dissertation. Supporting quotes have their place and provide important support but the key aspect is to synthesize the sources, provide alignment in your work, and support the use of quotes with your assessment. I cannot give you an expected number or percentage of acceptable quoting but remember it is to be your work and a good practice is to read other published articles and dissertations to acclimate yourself to best practices related to scholarly writing at this level.
It is equally important to properly credit authors or organizations for their work in APA format. Even if unintentional, directly using another’s work without crediting is plagiarism. This applies to tables or charts where you are directly using someone else’s work.
Late Policy
The ACE policy requires a 10% per day deduction for late assignments and participation posts.
