Artificial Intelligence Drawbacks & Consequences
Since we are humans, we are uniquely adapted to seeing distinctions amidst a wide variety of experiences, ideas, and even objects. As we venture through our days, we are constantly comparing, noting similarities, or contrasting, seeing differences, among the many objects and ideas we encounter. In fact, it is often the process of comparison/contrast that allows us to choose between two or more options, to make an evaluative judgement or preference for one subject or another.
In the first essay for this class, compare or contrast one of the following topics: Artificial Intelligence, Artificial Intelligence in Education, OR Artificial intelligence Drawbacks/Consequences–see Responses 1, 2, and 3 for further information regarding the topics. Students will look at the differences or similarities in the way in which the authors address their subjects.
After deciding which two essays students will analyze, the students need to opt to compare or contrast the points of the two authors. Since the essay is relatively brief, students should compare or contrast; to attempt to do both strategies will inevitably lead to a longer essay or a shallow treatment of the materials.
Once the determination of subjects and strategies has been completed, the students need to brainstorm for the points of similarity or difference. This decision is fairly important since the points must be the same for both subjects. Hence, if I were to compare two people, I could not look at person A’s intelligence, sense of humor, and personality and person B’s height, eye color, and ethnicity. Given this restriction, the points should be chosen carefully.
When the points are selected, then the students must choose an organizational method for presenting the comparison/contrast. There are two choices: subject-by-subject or point-by-point. For an essay, the choice is largely personal preference.
The advantages of the subject approach are that all of the information on a topic is in one paragraph; the disadvantage occurs if there is too much information on that topic.
The advantages of the point approach are that the two sides “fight it out” in the same paragraph; the disadvantage is that the essay needs more transitional connections to avoid choppiness.
