Cultural Competency in Healthcare Discussion Replies
1.1. I do agree with the writer’s premise that treating patients with respect is not enough. Cultural differences make up our society and allow individuals to express themselves and connect with each other. Learning about cultural differences and the values of specific cultures is an important part of being a respectful and quality healthcare provider. In the article, Galanti states that it is important to learn about cultural customs to avoid misunderstandings. Learning about different cultural customs can also be a tool learn common values that your patients have so you can provide them with the best care possible in their situation. For example, it could be possible that a patient doesn’t agree with Western medicine and would like to be treated in another way. It is important, as a healthcare provider, to be respectful of everyone’s preferences.
2. I do think that there is a danger in stereotyping when discussing cultural norms. Stereotyping can come off as incredibly rude and culturally insensitive, which is not a good look. Additionally, it is important to know that everyone is unique, as Galanti state in the article. Galanti also states that “A stereotype is an ending point, and no effort is then made to ascertain whether it is appropriate to apply it to the person in question” (Galanti, 2000). This can offend patients and be potentially dangerous to the healthcare provider.
3. I am most familiar with middle eastern cultures and customs. My parents moved to America from Israel so I am very familiar with Israeli culture and values. Additionally, after dating my boyfriend for a while, I have come very familiar with Persian culture norms and values as well. I find them to both be similar, yet unique in their own ways. I appreciate both cultures and love that I am able to immerse myself in both of them.
4. I do think that culture plays a significant role in the healthcare issue that I am researching. Since Schizophrenia is a mental health disorder, I do think that culture affects it. In many cultures, there is a lot of cultural stigma around mental health disorders. Many cultures do not accept it, and see it as weak minded, or irrelevant. This could affect someone who is trying to get diagnosed by making them feel ashamed. Additionally, this can make people feel invalidated by family or friends that share this cultural norm.
2.1. I agree with the writer’s premise that treating patients with respect is not enough, and through our training we will be more understanding of many different cultures by being exposed. I think it’s difficult to know every little thing about every culture, especially with our country being so diverse. With that being said, I also think there’s nothing wrong with respectfully asking questions is okay and can make the patient feel seen and heard. No one expect you to know everything, but it’s important to be aware and learn as much as you can for your profession and your own social knowledge in society.
2. I think there is a huge danger in stereo typing when discussing culture norms, and even in the article we read, the physician who didn’t take the Irish women’s pain seriously because she wasn’t acting the way the physician normally saw in women, she ended up not getting the best care and it ended in death (Health Policy Institute, 2019). We can also not make assumptions because people then feel like we truly don’t understand them, which can make them feel scared and misunderstood, and less likely to trust and open up which is important in healthcare. I think if you truly know a specific culture, or if it’s your own culture, you will naturally connect with the patient. But if you are not knowledgable, try not to stereotype and just ask politely questions you may have. I find that to be more receptive rather than assuming.
3. I come from a middle eastern culture, so I would say I’m pretty familiar with cultures from the Middle East. I would say American culture as well since I live here. But, working in a hospital in LA has exposed me to a handful of different cultures that I can now say I have a better understanding of expectations and norms than I did without this experience so I am thankful. It truly can make your job easier.
4. While researching, I’ve found that culture definitely plays a significant role in how healthcare is given and received, and being open and knowledge about cultures can give quality care for those with specific needs. Not only does cultural respect give better medical outcomes, it also contributes to accurate medical research (NIH, 2021). Most importantly, it’s important to always note and research what different ethnicities are more susceptible to when treating patients, and understanding that a disease or illness may present differently on different people. This is also where generalizations are not okay cause not everyone is the same.
