These initiatives signal to a company’s stakeholders that they have shared values.
Patagonia is a global company, based right here in Ventura, that sells outdoor apparel. A certified B-Corporation, Patagonia’s mission is to save our home planet. The company is recognized internationally for its commitment to authentic product quality and environmental activism, donating 1% of sales annually, contributing over $100 million in grants and in-kind donations since 1985.
As you can imagine in business, taking a side on social issues like this has potential fiscal repercussions; customers who disagree with the position taken by the company may be turned off and stop buying their products or services. However, this is a calculated risk that brands like Patagonia are more and more willing to take, as they realize that while turning off a certain demographic, they are increasing the loyalty of customers who are aligned with their values. So far, this strategy has worked very well for Patagonia as sales and the demand for their products have never been higher, despite being in the middle of a pandemic.
