Select ONE form of media (music, movies, tv, etc- choose one of those) and choose a specific example (one song, one movie, one commerical, etc). Discuss the following:
1. Name the media format you’ve chosen (movies, music, social media, print media, etc) and WHY you’ve chosen that format.
2. Choose ONE EXAMPLE in that format. One song, one movie, one commercial, one music video, one social media ad, whatever you choose. Only choose ONE EXAMPLE. Example- if you choose music you are only looking at one specific song. You should not be reviewing multiple songs. What messages about substances + behavior are being communicated (be specific- cite lyrics, imagery, etc). Cite at least 2 specific messages and the evidence to support that messaging (by citing lyrics, describing imaging, etc). For example- in the song “Whiskey Glasses” by Morgan Wallen, he talks about needing whiskey glasses (and lots of other pro drinking behavior) to make it through his breakup. This kind of messaging normalizes and reinforces alcohol as a an emotional coping mechanism. You need to cite specific lyrics/scenes/etc AND talk about how that reinforces the use of alcohol as a coping mechanism when we have hard things in our lives (such as a breakup). There are LOTS of messages like this- find them and write about them.
3. Do you think that media messages influence our attitudes about alcohol/drug use? How or why?
