Download the “PhD Prospectus Template” from the Writing Center. You will find a link to the template in this module’s resources. This template will be used as a framework to write your prospectus. In this module, you will add your Title Page, Problem Statement, Purpose Statement, and References to the template.
In the Dissertation Prospectus guide, read the section on Problem Statement (page 3) and the Quality Indicators: #2 Meaningful and #3 Justified (pages 6–7) of the guide. The quality indicators are the criteria by which your final prospectus will be assessed, so it is important to follow the instructions as you develop the prospectus.
Read the three to five (3–5) references you identified in Module 1 that provide a justification for your social-educational problem as meaningful to your professional field. Identify what three to five (3–5) experts indicated about the problem that made it relevant and worthy of research. Identify what is known about your topic from three current research studies and the gap in research that needs to be explored. Focus on the findings and conclusions of each study. Review the Problem Statement and Purpose Statements from the sample prospectus included in Module 1.
Problem Statement: Develop 2 paragraphs that meet the criteria listed in the Dissertation Prospectusguide for Problem Statements (Points 1 and 2). You are establishing two justifications in these paragraphs: (a) that your study is needed by identifying a social-educational problem and reporting the findings of three or more current research studies on that problem and (b) that three to five (3–5) experts agree this is a question or issue that is relevant to your field. Add the six to eight (6–8) sources to the Reference List using APA formatting.
In the first paragraph, you will build an argument that justifies that your study addresses a problem or issue in your field. Begin by stating what the social-educational problem is that you want to research in one sentence. Then, provide findings from three (3) current research studies that demonstrate what is already known about this problem. In your final sentence, formulate a plausible gap in current research that needs to be researched.
In the second paragraph, include three to five (3–5) additional resources where experts in your field indicate that this is a topic that needs to be addressed. Together these paragraphs make your Problem Statement.
Purpose Statement: In one concise paragraph, state what the purpose of your research will be. This is a statement of the gap in current research that your study is going to explore. It explains what new knowledge your study will contribute to your specialization field, conducting original research that contributes new knowledge to your field meets Quality Indicator #5. Read the purpose statement criteria in the Dissertation Prospectus guide, and indicate if your study is a quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods study. Be sure that your Purpose Statement aligns with your Problem Statement.
References: Include your references on the template. If your chair made corrections to your APA formatting in your Module 1 assignment, make those corrections and include all references that have been cited in your Reference List.On the Dissertation Prospectus Template, complete the following:
