To develop a greater appreciation of the visual arts and their cultural impact, this exploration of art across time and place allows learners to identify ways in which artists from different cultures use the visual arts to address similar themes, ideas, and perspectives. ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS PART 1: ARTWORK SELECTION 1. Select one work of art from each of the time periods listed. The artworks should each be from a different culture and time period. Each of the artworks you select should be linked by the exploration of a similar theme. Play the Curator’s Apprentice game for guidance on how to determine what theme a work of art addresses. a. Total of 3 works of art. b. Selected artwork must share a common theme or topic. c. Time periods: i. Time period 1: 10,000 BCE – 500 CE ii. Time period 2: 500 – 1800 CE iii. Time period 3: 1800 – Present 2. Articulate your rationale for choosing the selected pieces of artwork. a. Why did you choose these works of art? b. What do you find engaging about them? 3. Identify and describe the common theme that the selected artworks share. 4. Explain the significance of the theme. a. Why is it important to varied groups of people across time andplace? 5. Include images of your selected works of art or web links to the images in yourpaper. a. Cite the owner of the artwork; either under the picture or in the weblink. i. E.g.: Norton Simon Museum: Little Dancer, Aged Fourteen, by EdgarDegas PART 1 REQUIREMENTS • Two page Artwork Selection paper which articulates rationale for three selected pieces of artwork. • Identified common theme and its significance for the three selected pieces of artwork. a.
