1968 Papers Grading Rubric
Successful papers will do the following:
Introduction: raises a dilemma, sets out stakes, identifies what other historians have argued, lays out clear argument, tells reader a bit about how will go about demonstrating that argument.
Writing: clear writing, few to no grammar, spelling, or usage mistakes.
-uses proper (consistent) citation
Sources: Employs a range of primary sources (publicly available online documents, newspaper articles, photos, etc.) and not just one kind (say, nothing but documents from FRUS).
-utilizes at least one, preferably more, secondary source (article or book) about 1968 protests in his/her country.
Argument/Narrative: Successful papers will make a clear arguments about the roots, meaning, aftermath, and/or global connections in the country they focus on. They will do more than simply narrate a series of events or provide a series of statements of fact (premises). Rather, they will ask who, what, when, how, why questions. Who protested? Why in 1968? What issues animated protests? What connections did protestors make to events in other countries? What was the response of governments and others? What is the aftermath, legacy, impact of the protests?
It is particularly important that papers make the global connections, since these protests were animated by both local concerns and connected to events and protests taking place elsewhere, even If the primary causes are local.
Excellent Papers will do most or all of these things well. For an example, see the attachment.
Above average papers will do most of the above things, but will display one or more of the following:
– be marked by writing, usage, or grammar errors
– have an introduction which misses one or more of the components outlined above; may lack a clear argument for which the intellectual stakes of the paper are spelled out.
– employ a limited number of sources, or be heavily reliant on a single source
– be marked by inconsistent or inadequate citation
– a narrative which does not interpret events, but merely provides a blow by blow account of events
– a narrative which focuses solely on local events, without references to global connections or some of the global conditions underlying protests in other parts of the world.
Average or poor papers will do some of the things successful papers do, but will display more of the deficiencies outlined above: poor writing; poor citation; an introduction missing several components; lack of argument or clear narrative; and narrative which does not make global connections.
