The creative assignment has two parts1 .
The creative assignment has two parts1 . The first is the creative piece and the second is your essay of explanation. You will submit both together (as one document) via Nexus. The first part, the creative piece itself, is a piece of reception of one of the texts studied in this course, except the texts used in short essay (Hesiod’s Theogony and Works and Days Ovid’s Metamorphoses). Thus, you should choose any of the other texts discussed which you found more interesting, intriguing, or something that you enjoyed reading and create something out of it. For example, you can imagine the continuation of a poem, a change in the story/history, a parody, an imaginary dialogue between different characters, recreating a scene, painting or drawing a scene, composing a battle song, etc. In more concrete terms, for example, you can imagine and draw a comic strip representing Athena pulling Achilles by his hair, a scene from the Iliad. There have been students creating a choreography to represent the Judgment of Paris with the three Goddesses, a song to represent the genealogy of the gods in Hesiod, and even cookies to illustrate Medea’s story. So, get creative! The second part of your assignment is an essay of explanation. (one page, Normal margins with 2.54 cm each side, size 12, single spaced, Arial or Times New Roman). It must have a proper introduction (stating what your piece is and which work you had 1 For each guideline of this file that is not followed in the assignment, there will be a 5% penalty. Read the guidelines carefully. in mind to make it), development (specific details below), and conclusion (no bullet points!). Consider the following to write your essay of explanation: – Basic information: Course title; your full name; student number; instructor’s name, and the title of your piece. – Reference to the work (s) used: What works(s) did you use to create your assignment? What specific passage did you use? Quote it properly in your text and provide the references. – Explanation of the piece, your intentions and its outcome. Bear the following questions in mind when writing the body segment of your essay of explanation: What interested you in that particular work and specific passage? Why did you choose it? What did you intend to depict/question/satirize/challenge with your piece? What do you want the audience in touch with your piece to take away? What techniques did you use? Was it a skill you had before this assignment? Was it a skill you acquired to work on this assignment? What challenges did you face doing this assignment? What reflections did this assignment trigger? How did you like creating this piece? The format of your creative piece (first part) can be: 1. a text (obituary, letter, postcard, epitaph, ad, recipe, instructional guide – dialogues, monologues, short story, and poems are not allowed) 2. a comic strip (no digital drawings allowed) 3. an anime (no digital drawings allowed) 4. a cartoon (no digital drawings allowed) 5. a drawing (no digital drawings allowed) 6. a collage (no digital collages allowed, just cut-outs – provide the reference to the sources used, e.g., names of the magazines or newspapers, their issues and dates), 7. a video (recorded by you; you must appear) 8. a song (provide the lyrics and the melody composition sheet as attachments to your explanation sheet; this must be sung by you; if you make a parody of an existing song, the proper credits must be given in your essay of explanation and the voice must be yours) 9. a piece of handcraft (If you choose one of the following crafts, you must provide pictures of yourself making it – knitting, crochet, punch needle, cross stitch, pottery, jewelry, tapestry, sculpture, installation, fashion-design clothes, or embroidery – attach pictures of you doing them) 10.a photograph (taken by you and you must appear – or a group of 10 photos to resemble an Instagram post), 11.a video performance (TikTok, dance, theater, stand-up comedy – you must appear) 12.a recipe (themed cookies, recipes that are tied to a passage, etc. If you choose a recipe, you must provide pictures of yourself making it, the recipe itself, and the final result. You may even want to bring it to class and share it with us!). If you choose any written format or illustrated text, your page limit is 2 and it must follow the same guidelines given above to write the essay of explanation. Thus, if you choose this option, your assignment will have 3 pages (2 pages of creative piece + 1 page of essay of explanation). If you choose any visual image as a creative piece (e.g., drawing, collage, anime or a picture of your handicraft/recipe, etc.) you should submit it as one picture in a Pdf format. Thus, if you choose this option, your assignment will have 2 pages (1 page of creative piece + 1 page of essay of explanation). If you choose to record a video, a song, or a performance, YOU MUST APPEAR and it should be from two to five minutes. Videos and songs must be of your own authorship and using your own voice and not computer-generated or sung by anyone else. Compilations of songs or creating your own piece by just mixing and matching other songs are not allowed. The piece must be your own creation (both melody, lyrics, and voice). You must use YouTube to upload your piece (you do not need to have it as a public-listed video!). Video files will not be accepted due to the space they take. If you had the help of someone to record a scene and they are visible, they must provide a simple formal written consent with their names and sign it. This must be an additional separate page attached to your assignment. Provide an active link to your video in your assignment and paste a screenshot of the YouTube page showing your video to your page of explanation. Thus, if you choose this option, your assignment will have 2 pages (1 page of creative piece + 1 page of essay of explanation) or 3 pages (1 page of creative piece + 1 page of essay of explanation + 1 page of formal written consent to use someone’s image). If there is any other creative format that you would like to use and it is not listed here, send me an email so that I can approve of it before doing it. I am happy to add other possibilities
