Purpose: Complete an essay/project (3 full pages for 1.1 and at least 4 pages for 1.2, written texts only; a works-cited page isn’t counted) that rests on one Question at Issue regarding a topic about the intersection between language, power, culture, and identity and engages a central thesis by supporting, contextualizing, or complicating your argument. Your essay will respond to major counterarguments. The final essay will reflect a nuanced and complex understanding of an issue and showcase a culmination of the skills acquired throughout the course. This must include:
INTRODUCE your project with a paragraph that hooks your reader, establishes the synthesized context for your argument, and states your (Enthymemic) Thesis (Claim because Reason). A clear, narrow, focused enthymeme is indispensable.
DEVELOP and organize your argument through the Reason of your (Enthymemic) Thesis.
This line of reasoning (burden of proof) will include
a.) an inquiry into the Reason informed by specific evidence based on your research, properly integrated into your writing and argument (three or more paragraphs),
b.) major Counter Arguments (two or more paragraphs constructed with counterargument and rebuttal),
c.) an Earned Conclusion (one paragraph).
d.) at least 2 shared sources.
CREDIT the ideas of others by including parenthetical citations and a Works-Cited page that lists the sources you cite in your 1.1 and 1.2. Adhere to the conventions of MLA documentation.
POLISH your project. Aim to write formal academic prose while remaining hospitable to your readers. Adhere to the MLA documentation style requirements and formatting guidelines.
SUBMIT your essays on time on Canvas.

Grading:
a “complete” essay 1.1 meets the minimum page count and includes each of the parts 1-5 listed above
a “complete” essay 1.2 meets the minimum page count, shows substantive revision (at least 50% change), is MLA formatted, and is carefully proofread to minimize sentence-level error.
Your 1.1 and 1.2 will not be accepted and commented on if it does not meet the page length (at least three full pages for 1.1 AND four full pages for 1.2) and each of the parts 1-5 listed above.
You need to submit your 1.1 and 1.2 on time, or you won’t have your peers review your 1.1 in Weeks 8 and 9, which will delay the timeframe to receive your final score.
N.B: Though the 1.1 version is a shorter version, you need to compose your 1.1 with a complete structure, from introduction, line of reasoning, conclusion, and works cited.
