Music Appreciation Concert Report Assignment Music 1100 Summer 2024 For this assignment you must attend a live performance of music this semester and write a short paper. Your document must be typed in 12-point Times or Times New Roman font, be doublespaced, and have one-inch margins. Your paper should be completed as follows: Introduction (1 paragraph) • Identify the type of event: concert, club, etc… and discuss the effect that you felt the environment had on the event. Provide the name of the ensemble as well as the date, place, and instruments that were played. Performance Analysis (3 paragraphs) • Which composers from our textbook discussed so far were you reminded of and why? Discuss at least two. • Pick 3 terms from our coverage of the elements of music and apply them to this performance. Be sure to use the terms and provide examples from the performance of the characteristics you feel were used. Consider (but do not feel you need to limit yourself to) the following: Melody -Range -Shape -Motive/Motivic development -Sequence Musical Expression -Dynamics -Tempo Harmony -Consonance/Dissonance Musical Form -Repetition and contrast Rhythm -Syncopation Musical Texture -Homophony -Polyphony -Monophony Conclusion (1 paragraph) • Discuss the performance itself. How did the artists do? Were they exciting, boring, technically precise or sloppy? Did they have good stage presence? Were you engaged the whole time? • What did you enjoy the most and least and why? All assignments will be graded according to the following rubric: Criteria Elements of Music Spelling/Grammar Excellent (12 pts.) The elements of music are addressed accurately in a detailed manner. Good (9 pts.) The elements of music are addressed mostly accurately but there are a few inaccuracies and/or some missing details. Fair (7 pts.) The elements of music are addressed somewhat accurately but there are several inaccuracies and/or some missing details. Poor (5 pts.) The elements of music are not addressed accurately and/or there are almost no supporting details (or none at all). Excellent (4 pts.) No more than 2 spelling and/or grammatical errors. Good (3 pts.) 3-5 spelling and/or grammatical errors. An essay that correctly responds to the assignment but contains a couple of inaccuracies and has no more than 2 formatting errors. Fair (2 pts.) 6-9 spelling and/or grammatical errors. An essay that correctly responds to the assignment but contains some inaccuracies, and has 3-5 formatting errors. Poor (1 pt.) 10-13 spelling and/or grammatical errors. An essay that either does not correctly respond to the assignment, contains several inaccuracies, or has 6 or more formatting errors. Formatting/Accuracy An essay that correctly responds of the Assignment to the assignment, does not contain any inaccuracies, and has proper formatting.
