Advancement of the Nursing Profession
BSN as Entry Level:
Enhanced Knowledge and Skills: A Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree prepares nurses to provide care that improves patient outcomes. They can apply evidence-based procedures, make well-informed decisions, and deliver high-quality treatment because of the thorough training and education they get. Health care facilities with a larger proportion of BSN-prepared nurses had better patient satisfaction, fewer prescription mistakes, and lower patient death rates, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. This highlights how important postsecondary education is to improving patient care and safety (Staff, 2024).
Career Mobility: After earning their degree, a nurse with a BSN will be qualified for a variety of nursing positions and career paths. In addition to being qualified for positions in research, management, or leadership, they can practice nursing in a healthcare setting like registered nurses do. They are also prepared to seek more education, such as a PhD, DNP, or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree. (“The real difference between an RN license and a BSN degree. UCF Online,” 2022). This is a career with a lot of room to work in different fields
The negative aspects of BSN as an entry level are the following:
Accessibility: Raising the entrance threshold could discourage people from entering the field, particularly those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds who could find it more difficult to pay for a four-year degree.
Current Workforce Impact: Nurses are leaving in large numbers because of increasingly unsustainable working circumstances. While these rates of resignation are not new, the pressure and moral suffering caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have made them more severe (Ana, 2024).
Pros:
Respect for Experience: Grandfathering preserves the professional identity and morale of current nurses by honoring their achievements and experience.
Smooth Transition: Being flexible is a critical trait for nurses as it helps them deal with the always shifting healthcare environment. A nurse’s ability to adapt swiftly to changing circumstances and meet the various demands of her patients is essential (Ternyak, J., 2024).
Cons:
Inconsistency: Differential education requirements for new and experienced nurses might lead to differences in practice and professional recognition.
In conclusion, while the BSN as the entry-level requirement could advance the nursing profession, it must be implemented thoughtfully, considering the current workforce and ensuring support mechanisms are in place. Grandfathering can help in this transition, but it should be complemented by opportunities for professional development.
