To receive full credit on this assignment, you must post a response to EACH of the prompts below AND choose two of the prompts to respond to once more. In other words, everyone will respond to each prompt once, then you each will choose two of the four prompts to respond to again for a total of SIX POSTS per discussant.
To receive full credit for each post, every post should include the following:
If you are the FIRST PERSON to respond to a prompt, your response should include:
A comprehensive claim or argument that responds to the prompt.
Evidence from article that support your claim.
An explanation of how the evidence reflects/supports your argument.
If you are NOT the first person to respond to a prompt, your responses should include:
Either a statement of affirmation or a respectful point of disagreement about one or more claims made previously in the thread.
Direct reference to additional evidence from the article that either builds on the previous posts’ argument or provides a different perspective from previous posts.
An explanation of how your evidence either corroborates and strengthens previous posts or how the evidence modifies or challenges previous posts.
4. REPETITION: If you repeat what someone else has already said–making the same argument/observation and using roughly the same evidence–you will not receive credit for the repeated post. It is important that you give yourself enough time to read through previous comments so that you can add productively to the conversation.
The prompts for this assignment are listed below. I have already started a thread for each prompt. You should reply to the threads of each prompt. You should NOT start your own thread.
1. Fleming argues that most students who read Lincoln’s second inaugural are drawn to the final paragraph. According to Fleming, why are most readers drawn to the final paragraph? In other words, what about the content and style of the final paragraph is particularly appealing to most audiences and why is it appealing?
2. Fleming argues that the themes of the final paragraph do not reflect the main arguments of the second inaugural. Rather, the first three paragraphs communicate a message of “sin and retribution” for “the offenses of an erring nation and God’s subsequent punishment for those sins” (378). According to Fleming, how does Lincoln use style in the first paragraph to draw attention “toward a self-critical reflection on what has happened to the country during the previous four years” (381)?
3. Fleming notes that Lincoln’s Inaugural address likely didn’t meet the expectations of those listening in the North or the South. Based on the political situation of the time, what do you think folks on the Union side of the conflict expected and WANTED to hear from their president after their political and military victories? According to Fleming, how did Lincoln defy those expectations and why did he defy them?
4. Folks in the South largely blamed the North and its anti-slavery position, and Lincoln specifically, for the Civil War. In paragraph three, Lincoln changes that narrative to argue that the war was the inevitable consequence of God’s will. What stylistic features does Lincoln use to create this new narrative? Specifically, who/what is to blame for the war in Lincoln’s narrative? How do the stylistic features in the second and third paragraph change the agency of Lincoln, the North, the South, and God
