The picture of today’s families often presents an intricately diverse group of children and adults. And because young children are fundamentally connected to their families, early childhood professionals work with both children and families. For this reason, developing the skills needed to establish and maintain positive relationships with families is a crucial part of working in early childhood education. This assignment gives you the opportunity to better understand the importance of building relationships with families as well as some activities and strategies to put into practice.
Imagine this scenario: The director of your early childhood care center wants to launch an initiative to promote an engaging, positive and inclusive environment for all families within the community who use the care center’s services. The childcare center is located in a diverse urban area and serves families from a range of cultural backgrounds.
As part of this initiative, you have been asked to prepare a presentation for a parent-teacher meeting that will help the parents and teachers understand the relevance of the initiative and techniques to foster positive relationships.
Create a 15- to 20-slide presentation, with detailed speaker notes, in which you address the following topics:
- Understanding Family Backgrounds
- Describe the diverse nature of American families today.
- Explain how socioeconomic, racial, and cultural factors may influence a young child’s family life and education.
- Explain why it’s important for early childhood professionals to know and understand a child’s family background.

- Provide a minimum of 2 activities and/or strategies for creating a welcoming learning environment for young children.
- Provide a minimum of 2 activities and/or strategies for creating a welcoming and inclusive classroom for diverse families.
- Establishing & Maintaining Relationships
- Provide a minimum of 3 activities and/or strategies for establishing relationships with parents and families.
- Describe a minimum of 3 teacher behaviors that foster positive relationships with parents and families.
- Explain how communication channels will be set up with parents and families, including how to overcome language barriers.
