Music Concert
Concert Report Guidelines
This is worth 45 points. Normally this is a live concert attendance, but because of COVID-19 I am posting 4 video performances below for you to write the report. There are live concerts available, but I am not requiring it at this time. I’ve written brief program notes for each video.
You must answer the same three questions below for all 4 videos for full credit. Example: watch the first video, then answer the three questions below. Watch the 2nd video, then answer the same 3 questions below, and so on. In general, the more information you give the more points you earn.
- Describe the venue (place where the concert is held). Please describe the visual part of the videos. Use at least 3 complete sentences for this section.
- Describe the music being performed. You must describe in your own words the entire piece in each video. (Please include information like instruments used–is it a small group, an orchestra, or solo recital? What the music sounds like to you? How did it make you feel? Please include at least 2-time stamps, like from 2’37” to 4’16” from the video, when describing the music). I also expect that you will use appropriate musical terms from Lecture #1 (Music Elements) to describe the music. Use at least 10 complete sentences for this section.
- Your reactions to the video. There are no correct answers for this part; just be thoughtful and constructive. Use at least 5 complete sentences for this section.
- Once you finish reporting all 4 videos you are ready to submit. If you have questions, please let me know at least three days before the due date. Do not wait until the last minute. When submitting your concert report please have your files in word document, or pdf. Or, you can copy/paste the text in the Text Entry box.
- This is an individual assignment. It is not a group assignment. If I read similar reports from different students you all will have to re-do it, or I may give all of you a zero. Please do your own work!! If you have questions, please let me know at least 48 hours before the due date.
- DUE DATE: This is available on February 26, 2024, and due on May 17, 2024, at 11:59pm. (updated–you have until Sunday, May 19, 2024, at 11:59pm.)
Concert Videos
Video #1-Bolero: NY Philharmonic (social distance performance). This piece is by the French composer, Maurice Ravel (1875-11918). Originally this piece is combined with dancing. The choreography is quite intricate and modern. The piece is usually play as an opening of a concert. The bolero rhythm is stated by the snare drum at the beginning and remain so throughout the entire piece. The sultry and catchy melody is repeated over, and over again throughout the piece. However, the same melody is played by a different instrument, and combination of instruments, each time it appears. You may include which instrument, or combinations, you like hearing the melody in report.
Video #2-Pat Metheny: Orchestrion. This is an eclectic piece of music composed by multi-Grammy winning artist, Pat Metheny. He’s a composer, improviser, and guitarist. In 2010 he recorded an album of him with a “programmed automaton orchestra” of numerous types of percussion, piano, keyboard, guitarbots, etc… He did a tour of this album across the world. I regrettably missed his performance at the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles back in 2010.
Video #3-Beethoven 5th Symphony (first movement): In chapter 15 we will learn about Beethoven. The textbook does a great job of analyzing the meaning of this famous symphony (see pages 215-220). You can follow the music with the listening charts on page 215 and page 219. Make note of the conductor in this performance. His name is Gustavo Dudamel. He is the current conductor and music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, but this performance is not by the LA Phil. Next year he will lead the New York Philharmonic. So, catch him while he is still Los Angeles. In this performance I like that he takes an orchestra of relatively young musicians and make them sound so seasoned and polished. This orchestra is from Venezuela, which is where Dudamel came from and had his musical training.Beethoven 5th SymphonyLinks to an external site.
Video #4-Duke Ellington: It Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing. This is a Big Band performance. Duke Ellington is a composer/pianist of the Jazz era called Swing. You will learn about Jazz in Lecture #9. His career extended beyond the Swing era. A unique sound of Ellington’s band is that he added string instruments from the orchestra. This song was a big hit a that time, and there are different versions of it.
