Fractured Fairy Tales THE STORY Students will work solo or with one partner. (No trios – we want to avoid social loafing). Your task is to select a relatively well-known fairy tale, myth, or other fictional story with multiple characters. Next, you will rewrite it giving the characters psychological disorders. As you rewrite the story you should make changes that would reflect the fact that the characters now have a disorder(s). Key points: 1. You may take some liberty with the story arc and plot line, but try to keep it as close to the original as you can. Make sure the story is appropriate for young people. 2. Do not ever name the disorders in the story, you will only indicate the symptoms through the character’s words and behavior. The symptoms will be typed in italics. 3. The idea is for the readers to guess the symptoms. 4. You must use one specific disorder from each category listed below for a total of six disorders. If your story has fewer than six characters, give some characters multiple disorders. If necessary, you can also create new minor characters as long as they fit in with the original story. 5. The story presentation must be typed and include a character page which identifies the disorders each character has. The character page should be the last page (book option) or affixed to the back of the posterboard (storyboard option). 6. Each individual must turn in a planning sheet describing the specific disorders being used. This will be what your group will work on first and submit on Google Classroom. 7. This is a group grade. A lazy/off-task group member will hurt the group’s grade. Choose partners wisely. 8. See the rubric for more details of exactly what I want you to turn in. The Disorder Categories: you will select one specific disorder from each category. Six in total, minimum. 1. Anxiety (including OCD) 2. Mood (or affective) 3. Schizophrenia spectrum and related disorders 4. Dissociative disorders 5. Personality disorders 6. Somatic symptoms THE FINISHED PRODUCT You have two options: 1. A detailed storyboard that retells the story. This will be on a large project board and the pictures must be hand-drawn by your group. The text will be typed and affixed to the board. 2. A well written and hand-drawn story book of the fairy tale. It should be written and illustrated like a children’s book. The text must be typed and the pictures hand-drawn. Due Dates – End of the period the day of the Senior Final Exam (Juniors and Sophomores will have a second project due the day of the regular final exam) Rubric – Fractured Fairy Tales Names_________________________________________ Planning sheet: one per group member, completely and correctly filled out and submitted on Google Classroom. _______/20 Story: well crafted, entertaining, sticks somewhat to original story, few grammar and spelling errors _______/20 Symptoms: clearly observable, skillfully worked into the story in italics _______/20 Character page: all characters listed with their assigned disorder(s); list and describe the symptoms that each character displayed (so that I know for sure which character has which disorder) _______/10 Overall effect: 1. Creative 2. Entertaining 3. Clearly shows the symptoms of all six disorders 4. Well-organized and easy to follow 5.
