“Stages arise as individuals grow and face new decisions and turning points during childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Each stage is defined by two opposing psychological tendencies – one positive/syntactic and negative/dystonic. From this develops an ego virtue/strength or maladaptive quality, respectively. If virtue is adopted, it can help to resolve the current decision or conflict. It will also help subsequent stages of development and contribute to a stable foundation for core belief systems in relating to the self and the outer world.[3] The opposite is true with the adoption of the maladaptive quality.”
NOTE-Erikson may argue that the dysgenic, or less desirable outcome may take priority. An older adult could become mistrustful (trust vs. mistrust), because they are totally dependent on another person for managing their finances, keeping them safe, keeping their dignity intact if they should become incontinent, feed them the foods they enjoy, move them frequently so as not to develop a bedsore for pressure wound, assist them with hair, make-up, brushing teeth and such. An older adult may feel more guilty about not having the abilities to do what they once did (initiative vs. guilt), may feel inferior about not being more productive, ( industry versus inferiority) and so on.
