Reading Folklore Vernacular
Come on in and sit a spell!
If you are not from West Virginia, then you probably don’t know what it means to “sit a spell.” Many of the words and expressions we use daily depend on where we live. In this section we will examine the concept of vernacular.
Introduction
According to Sims and Stephens, folklorists use the term vernacular “to refer to the localized language, objects, and practices of groups within specific contexts” (6). Quite simply, it is the everyday language that people use, how we really speak to each other. Vernacular is also unique to certain groups and regions. For example, in the south, people often greet each other with a friendly “y’all” while in parts of Pennsylvania, the term “you’uns” may be used.
Dialect is similar to vernacular in that they both represent the language and vocabulary used in certain geographical areas, but with an added emphasis on pronunciation and accent. Dialect is also sometimes closely associated with a person’s social background or status.
Soda, Pop or Coke?
Which term do you use? Believe it or not, it may very well depend on where you live. Select ‘Soda,’ ‘pop,’ or ‘coke’ to learn more about the many ways we identify our favorite drinks.
American Versus British English
The differences between the vernacular or language that we use is not just something based on our own regional areas here in the US, but also across other English-speaking countries, such as England. To learn about some of these differences, watch the video American VS British English Words using the link provided.

Our textbook makes an important distinction by stating that “not everything that is vernacular is folklore, but all folklore is vernacular” (Sims and Stephens 7). For this course we will be examining vernacular through the lens of folklore only. This means that our emphasis will be on how and when people use or express distinct language and/or practices.
