Discussion Board Assignment is due on/before Wednesday week 6. Note: Reply posts can be posted up to 2 days after the deadline for your original post
General Instructions: This assignment is an interactive posting-based discussion activity created to encourage interaction between students as well as student and instructor. Each discussion board activity is focused on a central theme with corresponding questions. Your participation will be graded based on the completion of required tasks (listed below), and the depth of analysis and engagement in your posts- see grading rubric for Discussion posts.
For each discussion activity, you are required to complete two elements:
1) Submit an original post, in your own words citing at least 1 published source- our textbook counts, that answers the question or questions listed for the assignment (at least 250 words long- prepared in advance) posted by the deadline. Write your post as if it were a written assignment that you would turn in. Many people have points deducted because they submit their posts using slang language, e-mail or a text message formats. Note: Do not forget to capitalize the letter “I”. If you need help using proper grammar click onto the external links button and use the Purdue Owl Writing center.
AND
2) Respond to at least 2 other student’s posts. Note: Responding posts can be posted up to 2 days after the deadline for your original post.
Remember the assignment is to get you talking about what you have discovered. Use specific examples both in your answers to the questions and to your response to other students’ postings. Check out the Grading Rubric (View Rubric) before you submit your posts.
Specific Instructions for Discussion Board Assignment 2 – Week 6
To Vape or not to Vape (that is the question)
Step 1 – On a piece of paper, jot down everything you know about vaping. Do you have personal experience with vaping? Do you already have a specific opinion about vaping? (Like it, hate it, don’t really care?) What are some dangers or benefits you’ve heard about?
Step 2 – Watch the two YouTube videos on Vaping (one discusses the problems with vaping nicotine and other substances, and the other video discusses the benefit of using vaping as an alternative to smoking if you are a smoker and want to quit).
Video 1-https://youtu.be/9dZS_Rniak0Links to an external site.
E-cigarettes and vaping – David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA (4:38)
Video 2-https://youtu.be/FvRkTORuClcLinks to an external site.
Vaping: a more balanced message | Michigan Public Health (4:22)
After watching, what is your opinion about vaping now? Take a few more notes reflecting on how and why your opinion/position on vaping has changed or stayed the same.
Step 3 – Main Post: Imagine that someone you know has decided to start vaping. They can be a friend or relative, older or younger. You can also choose why they decided to start (to be trendy, to try out flavors, to quit cigarettes, to find a smokeless alternative, etc.) Write a compelling case about why you’re for or against their decision. As you build your arguments, include one or two strong pieces of evidence that support your viewpoint. You cannot use the videos but your source(s) must be reputable and also cited in proper APA/MLA format at the end of your post (use this linkLinks to an external site. if you need help with proper citation format). Your post length must be a minimum of 250 words.
Step 4 – Reply Posts: Choose two other students’ posts and pretend you are the person receiving these words. In your replies, you must continue and expand the conversation in a meaningful way. So, after addressing their points, fully explain a concern that you now have, using new information from a reputable source as part of your response. This can be done in agreement with the other person’s position, or as a counterargument, or in raising a question of another consideration altogether. (For example, the environmental impact of smoking vs vaping: which causes more waste, pollution, or wildfires?) AT LEAST ONE of your information points must be DIFFERENT from what you used in your own main post. And again, properly cite your source(s) at the end of each reply.
Remember: You must reply to a minimum of TWO other students by the deadline. Your two reply posts must be in complete sentences and be at least 100 words in length. (Additional posts do not have to meet word count.) Your two reply posts are due Friday by 11:59 PM, but you can make more than two posts.

To Vape or Not to Vape
For this assignment, I chose the scenario in which my younger nephew came to me for advice. He started vaping because all his friends at school started doing it. After watching the Juul videos, and the two other videos required for this assignment.
I understand you started vaping recently because many of your school buddies do. However, I’d like to take a moment to express my concerns about this choice and encourage you to rethink. Vaping may appear to be a harmless activity, but it carries significant hazards and potential repercussions, particularly for someone as young as you.
First, you should be aware that vaping can be harmful to your health, especially to your respiratory system. According to research, the chemicals in e-cigarettes can harm the lungs and airways, which can result in inflammation and respiratory problems. I understand that all the fruity flavors are tempting and may smell and taste delicious; however, some butter flavorings contain diacetyl, known for developing popcorn lung. This is essentially irreversible scarring and damage of fragile lung tissue that can kill you. Teens who vape are more likely than non-vapers to have chronic coughing and symptoms like bronchitis, according to a study published in the journal Pediatrics. Accordingly, you may increase your chance of early-onset chronic respiratory issues if you vape.
Nicotine addiction has been associated with vaping and can have long-term effects on health and well-being. The high nicotine content is a common component of vaping devices, and frequent usage can cause dependence because of its strong addictive nature. Nicotine has an extremely strong addictive quality, making it like heroin and cocaine. Nicotine addiction not only affects your physical health but can also have negative effects on your mental health, increasing feelings of anxiety and depression.
Furthermore, the growing popularity of vaping among young people has sparked worries about its potential as a gateway to smoking regular cigarettes. According to research, teenagers who vape are more likely to start smoking cigarettes in the future. This is concerning because smoking cigarettes is linked to a variety of major health issues, including lung cancer, heart disease, and strokes. By starting to vape today, you may unintentionally set yourself up for a lifetime of nicotine addiction and tobacco-related disorders.
To sum up, I would like to stress how much I care about your future and how much I value your health and well-being. I implore you to think twice before deciding to vape and to consider the possible effects it might have on your future and health. You can socialize and deal with peer pressure in better ways, and I’ll be here to help you every step of the way.

Recently my parents and I found out that my younger sister who is 16 years old and a junior in high school has been secretly vaping in her room and with her friends. My parents caught her and immediately raised their voice at her and grounded her. But they did that without knowing the real reason she started in the first place. After they had some time to cool off they sat her down and she began to tell them that recently she has had a hard time feeling like she doesn’t fit in so she thought if she maybe started trying nicotine products she could fit in with the “cooler” people. She had gone to a party and the teenagers there were all telling her she needs to try it and it will change her life, so she said why not? She did this with the thought that they might like her more if she does. I understand how she feels but I completely disagree with her actions and thoughts. I believe that there is way better ways to “fit in” then to ruin your health. I told her that she will find the right friends through doing things that don’t make her uncomfortable or go against her values. A study states, “Peer pressure plays a significant role in teenage vaping.?Parents should emphasize the importance of independent decision-making and responsible choices”(18). I had the same struggles she is having at her age with doing things i didn’t want to do, but doing them anyways to seem “cool”. I believe that helping and guiding her through ways to make friends around the vaping and smoking scene will be much more beneficial for her and her future.
