The Scenario
Several coalitions have created petitions pertaining to the local regulation of genetic engineering and GMOs and are asking for signatures. Petitions are one way that initiatives get on the ballot. In California, anyone can start a petition, but the petition must meet the required number of signatures in order for the issue to be brought to a public vote. In Pasadena, a petition to amend an ordinance (local law) requires 10% of the number of registered voters or about 9,150 signatures.
You and your friends have seen the signature gatherers outside of grocery stores and other shops throughout the city. Your friends know that you just learned about GMOs in biology class and they want to hear your thoughts. Read through each of the following petitions and then pick one to explain to your friend:
GM bacteria for bioremediation
Release of Oxitec GM mosquitoes
Note: While this is a hypothetical scenario and these are fictitious petitions, the issues and the GMOs are all real!
Initial Post – Video response (due Wednesday)
Make a short video (~1 min) explaining the petition to your friend by answering the following questions in your own words. You will not be able to see the posts of your classmates until after you have posted. This is a casual video response, not a formal presentation, so you can just record yourself speaking and do not need to put together any slides for the video.
State the name of your petition in the title of your post.
Explain or list the problem(s) that this petition aims to address.
What is the GMO being discussed and what technique did scientists use to manipulate the genome?
Describe or list 1-2 points in support of this petition.
- Describe or list 1-2 points opposing this petition.
Embed a link to your video or post the video in the discussion.
- Peer Reply – Written response (due Saturday)
Time to dig a little bit deeper into these petitions! Choose one classmate’s post to which to respond, making sure to pick a post that summarizes a different petition than you did in your initial post. In your reply, you will be doing some outside research to identify additional information beyond what is available on the petition page.
- Your reply post must do at least one of the following:
Provide relevant background information about the biotechnology, the problem that the petition is attempting to solve, or the proposed solution.
- Identify at least one potential environmental or ethical concern relating to this petition.
In your post, explain how this background information or environmental/ethical concern affects the feasibility or likely outcome of what is proposed. You will need to incorporate a minimum of one credible outside source into your response. (It can be one of the sources listed on the petition page.) Remember to cite all sources fully, including in-text citations and a full reference list at the end, for full credit.
