This Module #4 Activity asks each student to apply your personal reflective practices to the EDN 301Course Objectives (see the course syllabus) and one of the six North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards (https://files.nc.gov/dpi/north_carolina_professional_teaching_standards_2.pdf).

From our NC Department of Public Instruction: “The North Carolina Educator Evaluation System is built on professional standards for individuals who work in the State’s public schools. All sets of professional standards were developed with the input of professional organizations, district staff members, and representatives from institutions of higher education training programs. Each set of standards captures the skills, knowledge, and behaviors that should be displayed by individuals in that specific role.” For the purpose of student interest, the North Carolina Teacher Evaluation tool can be found here: (https://www.ecsu.edu/documents/teacher-education/rubricEvaluatingNCTeachers.pdf).

To complete this activity, each student is being tasked with the following:

1. In terms of your professional instructional design growth, please reflect upon YOUR personal experiences in class this semester,
2. identify and reflect on ONE of the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards (see #1 – #6), and
3. identify and reflect on ONE of our EDN 301 course objectives.

Specifically, I’d like for you to identify ONE NCDPI Teacher standard, at least ONE EDN 301 Course Objective, and through narrative, describe how you have met those identified objectives this semester and become a better pre-service teacher.

The final product for the activity should be either a written essay (around 3-4 paragraphs) or a presentation with a platform of your choice (some examples would include PowerPoint, Prezi, etc. – please be creative!). Any option should result in a professional product.

This assignment has a dual purpose:

1. It allows each student to take a step back and reflect upon their experiences in this class. It is my hope that you will review the coursework, connect with your professional instructional design experiences, and reflect on your challenges and successes. (This is one of the required areas in the North Carolina Teacher Evaluation tool that every teacher must show evidence of at the end of every academic year. This is a glimpse of one way to demonstrate evidence to the state for certification.)
2. I use the information to help mold my future courses.

Use this opportunity to practice what you will be doing in the classroom in order to fulfill that teacher evaluation tool category (Standard 5) of being a reflective practitioner. Your reflection should have a minimum of the following items:

• What professional instructional design resources or experiences have you gained from this class? Demonstrate how you connect those experiences/skills to the course objectives and the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards.
• What was your favorite assigned reading from this semester and how will this impact your future teaching career? Demonstrate how you connect those to the course objectives and the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards.
• What was your favorite instructional design topic covered in the course? Demonstrate how you connect those to the course objectives and the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards.
• Reflect upon your performance in this class as a whole, including any additional things that you would like to share with your instructor
  • Successes – your achievements or things of which you are proud
  • Areas where you think you could improve (Are there ways classmates or your instructor could help you improve?)
