Goal: By interviewing a current building administrator, you will better understand the core HR functions of recruitment, selection, placement/induction, appraisal, staff development, and retention as they are actually conducted in a work place setting.
Product: Create a scholarly paper that incorporates the interview responses of the principal that highlights the core HR functions addressed in this lesson. Be sure to complete the required Demographic Data web form in Part 2 located below the grading rubric.
Part 1: Principal Interview
Interview a principal on the following topics and then summarize the responses of the administrator into a narrative essay. Questions should include at a minimum the following:
Recruitment/Selection
How do you advertise a vacancy?
How do you select the candidates to be interviewed?
How do you interview the candidates?
How do you check for references and credentials?
How do you select the best candidate?
How and when do you offer the candidate the position?
How do you notify unsuccessful candidates of the outcome of the process?
Placement/Induction
How do you acquaint new employees to the school/faculty, staff and community?
Does your district have an induction program? If not, does the school sponsor one?
What component of the induction program do you feel is the strongest and why? Which one would you like to see improved and why?
Appraisal
What is your process for evaluating instructional staff?
What instruments are used and how often does the evaluation occur?
How do you collect data to be used?
Staff Development
How do you determine the needs of the faculty/staff for staff development?
How is the final decision made on what will be offered?
How do you evaluate the effectiveness of staff development offered?
Retention
What do you think are the biggest challenges to retaining qualified staff?
What staff retention strategies do you use at your building?
What staff retention strategies are used at the district level?
What type of reward or incentive program is used in your district or school, if any?
Reflection
What did you learn about the HR processes that you were unaware prior to the interview?
What surprised you the most and the least?
As an aspiring leader, what do you think you would do differently in any or all of the HR functional areas?

Create a cohesive narrative summary of the questions listed above in Part 1. Do not list each question and then answer it.
Write in a scholarly manner appropriate for a graduate degree program.
Use a minimum of two (2) peer-reviewed scholarly references (2018-2023) to support your response one of which must be your course text (Rebore).
