Topics in Power and Society writing
Instruction Choose a documented case of a power struggle from any part of society – economic, political, social, or high-profile personal – where there has a been a conflict between two sides, and a known outcome and that you find interesting. Use the taxonomies studied so far in this course to describe and analyse the types of power exercised. Offer evidence or speculate how the power instruments used were created and communicated. Suggest ways in which the outcome could have changed if power instruments were used differently. Your analysis should be 1500 words (+/- 50 words) excluding the title page and reference page, and should be consistent with APA referencing styles. The course’s name is Topics in Power and Society. You can choose from economic, political, social, or high-profile personal. I think social is better. The specific Requirement Pick an event that interests you. It is very hard to explore something that you are indifferent to. Sounds simple, but I have seen many instances when students pick something that is seemingly easy (e.g. an event with a lot of media coverage) but that they don’t care as much about, and the paper comes out flat. Please give me a concise summary of the event you are discussing and do not assume that I know it. 4-5 sentences of a general description and then a few more sentences of the general power dynamics should be good, before you dive into your exploration. Have a very clear central point that you are trying to lead to or question that you are exploring (think, a thesis statement or a research question). State it clearly in the introduction. Please consider building an outline for your paper before you write it. It may seem like a waste of time to some of you, but it will make your writing a lot more organized and clear to follow. Follow the prompts mentioned in the Learning Outcomes. You can use them as points in your outline. Please follow APA 7 for formatting your document. You should have minimum of 8 sources. Please write in paragraphs. I am looking for analysis, not summaries of events. Notes of where Power comes from: https://smallbusiness.chron.com/5-sources-power-organizations-14467.html The late Kenneth Boulding, a social theorist and Nobel laureate, wrote a book entitled The Three Faces of Power (1989) from which there is a reading for this unit’s topic of definitions and principles. The three faces or categories of power Boulding suggests are: 1. The power to destroy 2. The power to create 3. The power of love Class Rules: This class has a ZERO tolerance policy of AI.
