Digital health and wellness are critical to consider and pay attention to when using technology in the classroom. One of the many aspects of digital health and wellness is the prevention of cyberbullying. Along with the increased opportunities for learning that technology has made available in our classrooms, technology has increased the opportunities to bully each other in new ways – within and outside of school. Just as it is important for teachers to learn about new technology applications and how these can enhance learning, it is just as important for teachers to be aware of what can go wrong and to be proactive in establishing and monitoring the online learning environments so that they are conducive to learning.
Teachers should learn best practices and various ways to promote digital health and wellness, including understanding of the effect that cyberbullying has on students. Just as we strive to consider the physical and logistical factors that will allow students to learn in the brick-and-mortar classroom, we have to bring a similar intention to the digital environment, mindfully considering what will promote digital health and overall wellness for students.
For this assignment, research and create an interactive “Digital Best Practices” information sheet to share with colleagues for a grade range of your choice (K-3, 4-8, 9-12) that includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Student-centered instructional strategies teachers can use to promote digital health and wellness for students.
A list of possible short-term and long-term consequences of irresponsible social networking, along with the unsafe and inappropriate use of instructional technology.
- Three resources for teachers and students to understand the meaning of digital privacy and how each applies to the classroom and virtual environment.
- Why cyberbullying is important to address in the classroom and virtual environment. Include at least two helpful online resources regarding cyberbullying available for teachers and students.
- Reference the ISTE Standards for Students and/or the ISTE Standards for Educators you have addressed.
- In your information sheet, include embedded links, graphics, videos, and resources to enhance the information sheet.
- Support your “Digital Best Practices” sheet with a minimum of three scholarly resources.
In TEC-516, you created the “Technology Coaching Website” you will develop throughout the program. You also began completing the “Standards and Rationale” worksheet. In ongoing preparation for the capstone project, add the information sheet on the appropriate page of the “Technology Coaching Website.” Add this artifact to the “Standards and Rationale” worksheet using the table associated with TEC-530. Submit both the completed “Technology Coaching Website” and “Standards and Rationale” worksheet as part of the capstone project in TEC-595.
