LIT 2120-Lipsey Creative Interpretations Context: This assignment draws on all of the texts that we’ve discussed this semester. Purpose/Task: Design an adaptation or interpretation of one of the texts that we have discussed in class. You can write a short story from an alternate perspective, write a play with an alternate ending or contemporary adaptation, or any other creative interpretation that you choose. Touch base with me to so that I can approve your idea if it’s not listed below. Audience: anyone who has read the text. Genre/Format: varies based on project. Course Objectives: Read critically, interpret and appreciate literary texts of multiple genres. Identify and explain how literary texts are relevant to their own experience and to the experiences of their own communities. Explain how literary texts reflect and sometimes challenge the historical, social and cultural contexts in which they are embedded. Write about literary texts at a college level. Evaluation: This project will be evaluated based on the following: Student displays and understanding of the original text. Student follows genre conventions appropriate to chosen genre. PROJECT IDEAS: ALTERNATE PERSPECTIVE SHORT STORY. Write a short story from an alternate perspective in the work. ADAPTATION OR DRAMATIC INTERPRETATION. Write a script for a play and act it out. PUT TOGETHER A CAST FOR THE FILM VERSION OF A WORK. Imagine the director-producer wants a casting director to make recommendations. Decide who would be the actors and actresses. Include photos and descriptions of the stars and tell why each is “perfect” for the part. Poster size either 8.5 x 11, or 16 x 20. DESIGN THE FRONT PAGE OF A NEWSPAPER. Write a short news story describing the major event in your work. Include an attention grabbing headline and teasers for the rest of the paper. Poster size either 8.5 x 11, or 16 x 20. BE A MODERN ARTIST. Using various mediums, create a collage that comments on a particular theme or issue in the work. Poster size either 8.5 x 11, or 16 x 20. CREATE A DOSSIER ON A CHARACTER. Pretend that you are a foreign spy sent to report on your chosen character. Compile into a secret file general and specific information regarding your character. Don’t forget the photo. Size-file folder. DESIGN A TRAVEL BROCHURE. Illustrate and advertise the “world” of your work. Size 8.5 x 11. FACEBOOK PHENOMENON. Create a pretend Facebook page for your main character. Who are they “friends” with? What does their profile look like? Did anyone post something on their wall? Poster size either 8.5 x 11, or 16 x 20. PHOTO FINISH. Take photographs to represent someone in your story and the changes that the character experiences. For example, if a character is sad all of the time at the beginning of the work you could take a picture of something blue as a symbol to represent being sad. If an event changes the character to make him happy, you might want to take a picture of something that makes you think of happiness. Poster size either 8.5 x 11, or 16 x 20.
