By: Gelila Tsegay ( This powerful anti-war picture was captured by photographer Jeff Widener. It is titled “The Tank Man” from 1989, during the Tiananmen Square protests. A single protestor is seen in the picture, blocking the way of a row of Chinese military tanks. The image’s powerful symbolism of a single person’s brave resistance against supreme state authority is what makes it so captivating. This image was taken from a hotel balcony where Widener was staying, just half a mile from the scene. He mentions that the protestor stood directly in front of the tank and kept blocking the way of the tank as it kept trying to get around him. Apparently, the man then climbed the lead tank and appeared to be communicating with the people inside. The man was then pulled away from the scene. The photograph inspires viewers and represents the fight for freedom and democracy by capturing a moment of great bravery and resistance in the face of injustice. Despite the fact that we do not know the identity and outcome of the protestor in the image, the public’s response to “The Tank Man” was remarkable. The picture gained widespread media coverage and came to represent both the larger fight for democracy and human rights as well as the Tiananmen Square protests. The Chinese government’s suppression of pro-democracy protestors was brought to the attention of the world and received international condemnation. The picture is still potent as a symbol of resistance against oppression and tyranny. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, a date that will always live in infamy, the U.S. entered the war and began the development of the atomic bombs. On August 6th and August 9th, 1945, the U.S dropped the bombs “Little Boy” and “Fat Man” on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki killing approximately 200,000 civilians causing many to attempt to flee the inferno that was unleashed upon them. The survivors of the attack known as Hibakusha did not escape without long term health effects caused by the radiation which also led to many deaths in the following months. In this image, we see civilians who survived the initial catastrophe gather outside of the collapsed or burning buildings as they seek refuge and attempt to find their surviving loved ones. Many of them are struggling to walk from their injuries, while some are still burning alive. You can see some of the survivors sitting on the sidewalk as they comfort and hug the survivors surrounded by debris. They appearance is disheveled as their clothing looks dirty and torn from the smoke, and their hair as well. This is one of the less graphic images however in many other images you see the outcome of the civilian’s injuries that resulted in burning flesh and other gruesome injuries. This image symbolizes the torture and destruction caused by the nuclear attacks. There is a lot of emotion with this image, although it is a black and white photo, it depicts the darkness, and the mass destruction caused by the nuclear weapons. It is published in the United Nations as a reminder to humanity that nuclear war should be prevented in the future to avoid another catastrophic event.
