Zine Final Draft
Submit the FINAL DRAFT of your zine here! Before finalizing, please make sure to review the overview and rubric. Make sure you have all of the “ingredients” and evaluate your own work using the rubric.
If you have used the basic zine template, this will ensure ensure your pages are the correct size, regardless of whether you have been creating your zine sections by hand, in Canva, or directly in the template.
To submit your final draft and to prepare your zine for our zine festival in class on Wednesday 5/8, you have two options for sharing your work–digitally or printed. If you have been working by-hand, you should email Dr. H by 11:59 pm on Tuesday 5/7 to let her know that you will be bringing your finished zine in person on 5/8, but you should ALSO submit something digital here for grading (photos are fine, they do not need to be perfect as long as they are clear).
Alternatively, if you are pressed for time, you are welcome to submit your zine as-is in the basic template–it will just look slightly less cool when you share it during our zine festival and you do lose your eligibility for the makeup/extra credit milestone (zine festival reflection), but at least you would receive a grade for your final draft.
Video instructions on using Issuu & Printable Templates
(Note that this video uses a slightly sub-optimal “download .png” method for getting from basic template to printable–see step-by-step isntructions below for a better alternative. If you are using Canva, you may be able to export directly to Issuu!)
Option A, Issuu:
Pros: This option may be less time-consuming than submitting a printable. You will also have your own permalink, which you can share with anyone you like.
Cons: You will need to create an account within Issuu. If you choose not to create a printable, you will not receive a printed copy.
Instructions for Issuu option:
Once you are SURE your draft is finalized, open the draft in the basic zine template.
Go to File –> Download –> PDF.
Go to Issuu.com and create a free account. DO NOT pay for an account unless you really want to use Issuu a lot! You get several free uploads.
Upload the PDF of your zine to Issuu. Click “publish” after verifying that everything looks OK.
Copy and paste the shareable link into this Canvas assignment for your submission.
Option B, Printable:
Pros: If you submit a printable, you will receive a printed copy on Wednesday 12/6. You will also be able to print as many copies as you would like.
Cons: Creating a printable version is a bit more time-consuming than the Issuu option, as you will need to save each page as an image and place each image in the correct location within a printable template. If you choose not to create an Issuu link, you will not have a digitally shareable version.
Instructions for Printable option:
In the basic zine creation template, finalize all of your pages and make sure they are in the correct order, if you are importing from photos, scans, Canva, or some other format.
Once you are SURE your pages are finalized in the basic template, start getting them into the printable templates.
You can SELECT all content on the page, copy it, and paste it into the correct location in the printable template (delete the box in the template telling you which page number it is first).
Alternatively, you can try going to File –> Download –> .png, current slide. Repeat this for each slide in the template until you have a .png image of each page. This may make some fine details in the pages a bit blurry when printed, but is typically fine for Issuu.
Select the proper printable template, keeping in mind that each sheet of paper can fit 4 pages of content once properly folded:
If your zine is 8 pages or fewer (including both sides of front and back cover), use the 2-sheet template.
If you have 4 pages of content, 1 references page, and a front and back cover, consider leaving the inside front cover page blank and putting your references page on the inside of the back cover for a neat, organized look.
If your zine is between 9 and 12 pages(including both sides of front and back cover), use the 3-sheet template.
If you have 8 pages of content, 1 references page, and a front and back cover, consider leaving the inside front cover page blank and putting your references page on the inside of the back cover for a neat, organized look.
If your zine is between 13 and 16 pages(including both sides of front and back cover), use the 4-sheet template.
If you have 12 pages of content, 1 references page, and a front and back cover, consider leaving the inside front cover page blank and putting your references page on the inside of the back cover for a neat, organized look.
If your zine is over 16 pages, email Dr. H for a custom template ASAP….or consider cutting it down to fit.
- Make a copy of the printable template. Drag each .png into the appropriate place (you may choose to fill the entire page, or to leave a border of space around each page. Delete any labels on pages you wish to leave blank.
- Once you have all of your page images in the printable template, you want to check and make sure everything is where you want it–you can do a test print by selecting “print both sides, flip on short edge.”
