Part 1: Define the Context
In a narrative format, introduce your school.
Include data such as what type of school or school district you serve in, student and staff demographics, socio-economic data, location, size, general academic performance, etc.
Provide other relevant background information that helps illuminate your school profile.
Be sure to include the school’s/district’s mission, vision, and values statements; however, put these statements in an Appendix section of the paper.
Part 2: Define the Problem:
- Use the planning chart above to brainstorm possible areas of misalignment between the school’s vision, mission, and values statements and the current reality of the school/district site.
- Using those same filters, identify challenges that exist relative to the desired future state.
- Select one specific gap or problem you want to focus on for this course. This selected area will become the foundation for your project-based learning activity and the associated activities. Be sure it is an area of personal interest given you will spend the next 7-8 weeks exploring, researching, and writing about this challenge in your school/district.
- Identify how this problem is connected to the concepts of equity, inclusion, and cultural responsiveness in your school/district.
Include rationale for why this problem is especially important to your school/district.
Submit to your faculty/project mentor for approval and have them send documentation of meeting.
Part 3: Framing the Problem
Create a clear problem statement you will seek to address through this Problem-based Learning (PBL) Experience.
- Examine various scholarly sources to familiarize yourself with the relevant peer-reviewed, scholarly research related to the problem or issue you have chosen including key concept, issues, and trends.
- Examine research in this problem area as it relates to equity, inclusion, and cultural responsiveness relative to this problem area and connect it to your problem statement.
- Write a narrative the synthesizes the research in the two bullets listed above. The goal is to provide a solid research basis as to why this “problem” you selected is greater than just within your school.
- Part 4: Personal Reflection on the Problem
Write a personal reflection on why you, as an aspiring leader, selected this particular problem to research and explore.
Discuss how your choice relates to issues of equity, inclusion, and cultural responsiveness.

- Using the PBL Gap Analysis form above identify at least five (5) possible gaps between the current reality and the desired state for your school/district.
Select one specific area that you want to explore in-depth over the course of this term.
Write a one paragraph summary that identifies how this problem is connected to the concepts of equity, inclusion, and cultural responsiveness in your school/district.
Include rationale for why this problem is especially important to your school/district.
Review the chart and the one paragraph narrative with your faculty mentor for approval and have them send documentation of meeting.
After getting approval, write a minimum 4-5 page scholarly narrative essay using the structural outline below to discuss your Presenting the Problem processes. Be sure to address and synthesize all the bulleted items in Parts 1-4 in your narrative.
