In this assignment, you will conduct an interview with a person from outside the course regarding their experiences with race, ethnicity, culture, and racism in their own sports participation. This could be about current or previous participation in sport(s).
Please follow these practical instructions:
Schedule an interview with a family, friend, peer, co-worker etc. Make sure you choose someone convenient and easily accessible, not a famous person, athlete, coach, celebrity, etc., who is unlikely to respond.
You will most likely need to arrange for an in-person, video (i.e., Zoom), or phone interview. You are REQUIRED TO RECORD THE INTERVIEW.
- Before the interview:
- Confirm the interview time in advance.
- Make sure you have a recording device or use the record function via Zoom.
- If you are using Zoom, make sure you have your Zoom meeting room ready and computer charged.
- Creating an Interview Guide:
- The overall task of this interview is to ask your person to describe their views about race, ethnicity, and racism as they relate to participation in sport. They can speak to any sports or physical activities that they participate in or have previously participated in. You should create approximately 7-10 interview questions that cover these ideas below:
The beginning of your interview should be more descriptive. For example, talk about their basic history, background, immersion, and experiences in a particular sport.
As you continue your interview questioning, then ask them to offer their own definition of each of major course terms: race, ethnicity, and racism. (NOTE: during the interview, don’t help them define these terms. If you help them during the interview, they may adopt your definition, and then you won’t learn as much from them about their understanding as you could).
You can also ask about stereotypes, intersectionality, etc.
- Continue to ask questions about their specific experiences of sport. For instance, you might ask: “Who were the players on the team? What about the coaches? Were there different racial makeups amongst the teams? Have you ever had any issues or incidents? If so, how did you deal with racial conflicts or segregation?”
- Finally, you must ask them questions about what can be done so that sport can potentially sustain or achieve greater racial reconciliation and unity, and whether they believe sports can help achieve such unity and reconciliation, or if they perceive sports as a barrier to this type of racial unity and reconciliation.
- Interview recording, transcribing, analysis, and discussion:
- Recording
- Use a recording device (e.g., phone) or Zoom to audio or video record the entire interview. Take some notes during the interview, making note of any comments that stand out (and the time of the interview – this will help when transcribing)
Transcribing
A 30-minute minimum interview with this person is expected to take place for this assignment. You should then transcribe 3-4 single spaced pages of selected key data from this interview (e.g., type up the most interesting parts of the interview). If key data comes at various times of the interview (i.e., beginning, middle, and end), please be sure to make this clear by inserting a heading with the minutes it took place (e.g., Beginning: Minutes 5-8 in the Interview or Middle: Minutes 10-20 minutes in the Interview).
- The transcript will be attached at the end of your report as Appendix 1.
- Analysis
- Analyze and interpret the data. Connect the information collected to at least 3 course materials listed on the syllabus and 2 other academic articles or books that you find yourself through the CSU Library
- Structure and Guidelines (please use these specific section headings for 1, 2, and 3 as provided below)
- “1) Introduction” (300 words, 20 points)
- Explain your topic and the thought processes about choosing your specific topic and interview participants. Who were they, and why were they a good fit? Please change their name.
- Explain the practical process of designing and conducting this interview
Give a detailed summary of the interview practicalities (e.g., discuss preparation, time, format, and duration). What went well with the interview and what didn’t? In what ways were you happy with the amount and detail of information you attained- what could you do to improve next time?
“2) Data Analysis and Interpretation” (approximately 700 words, 45 points)
Provide selected extracts from the interview (e.g., the quotes) and use your own words to analyze and interpret these quotes to create this discussion. You should connect the data collected to at least 3 course materials listed on the syllabus and 2 other academic articles or books that you find yourself through the CSU Library.
