This assignment is intended to explore the problem/solution issues through research process in a Short Report/Internal Proposal. The purpose of a Short Report/Internal Proposal is to offer a realistic and constructive plan to help your company run its business more efficiently and economically. In research, you have to gather, summarize, and organize information before you can interpret it. Then in interpreting it, you must be able to answer questions and solve problems. We will be doing this through the lens of Food Ethics as the business and the areas we discoevered in the book and documentary as the problem areas you will research, explore, and propose a solution for. You will be choosing one of the following issues from “Appetite for Profit” and use points made in “Hungry for Change” to create a research report on this topic.
Assignment
Step 1: Choose 1 of the following topics for your report:
Nutriwashing – Address the way companies persuade and their effectiveness on the public through marketing, nutriwashing and the halo effect, and corporate vs. personal responsibilities.
Junk Food and Children – Address how marketing impacts kids, education on food, and access to healthier options
Food Additives – Address what you are being told, sold, freedom of choice, etc. when it comes to additives such as: sugar, aspartame, MSG, etc.
TIP!
Although health impacts can be a part of your discussion, the report SHOULD NOT be focused on it. The topic and the areas to address are listed above, please follow those to avoid making this a Childhood Obesity or Type II Diabetes report (which it is not).
You are researching/explaining/developing on the causes more than developing the effects.
Also, this report is based on the book AND documentary and therefore, should be part of introductions and integrated into your development.
Step 2:
A short report usually has the same format as the memo (header, block paragraphs, spacing, etc. as you did for the Correspondence Assignment). Please read Chapter 8 from your text for more information on objective and different styles of short reports. Specifically, pg 327 on Internal Proposals will add more context for this report (plus there is a model Figure 8.9 on page 330).
Step 3: REQUIRED
Drafting and researching: Below are the 4 subheadings needed for this proposal, which will be different from the model in your text since our approach is different. Please follow them for formatting purposes.
I. The Introduction
Presentation/overview of the problem
Purpose and focus of your claim(s) [based on the problem]
In the first part of the introduction, present the problem.
Then, develop on the background about the problem and review the research and facts (your book and the documentary) on it to give your readers a context to show them how your research fits into the ongoing issues in your topic area. Some ways to approach this can be by the following:
You may tell why this problem has been a problem, why previous attempts have failed to solve it, or why you think this particular angle to the problem is important. You can also mention what benefits are to be gained from solving this problem or exploring this topic from your perspective.
Finalize this section by establishing your purpose/focus/claim/thesis.
II. Discussion and Formal Research
Discussion Section (not a subheading just instructions of what is required)
Your discussion section should develop on what you have learned from your text/documentary and your collected research, based one of the 3 topics listed above and the considerations specified next to them.
Your discussion should be organized so that it relates directly to your claim about the topic.
You want to avoid introducing new ideas here or discussing issues not directly related to the exploration and discovery of your main claim.
Research (not a subheading just instructions of what is required)
You will be investigating the problem you selected through research.
You should rely on 6 sources to support and validate your position. 1 must be the book, 1 must be the documentary, and 4 must be found through your own research.
IMPORTANT FACTS!
Your discussion and research portion is the most important. This is where you will develop your claims and prove the problem through research. Keep in mind, the research is meant to support and validate you IT SHOULD NOT be relied on to do the development for you (think of it this way, if your research says more than you, then it did the work, not you)
III. Recommendations Section
By presenting the logical outcome of your research and thinking, your recommendation should recommend a course of action, make a prediction, propose a solution to a problem, offer a judgment, or speculate on the implications and consequences of your ideas.
IV. Conclusion
A conclusion unififies your research results and discussion and elaborates on their significance to your claims. You want to end with final words for your audience to be left with and to be persuaded of your claims and recommendations.
Format
Make sure to follow the memo format and write in professional style – keep the 4 keys in mind as you do this as it will be factored into the grade.
No lengthy paragraphs or essay format should be used. This is a professional Internal Proposal and not an academic essay. Refer to your text again if needed.
The memo itself must be a minimum of 2 full pages minimum (no maxmimum) – remember the format must be single spaced block paragraphs. Also, there should only be a regular double space between paragraphs and proper header. These will also be factored as part of format and will be deducted for inaccurate format.
Works Cited: Of course, your research paper is not complete without your list of references. Documenting your research paper to use your sources in a manner that maintains academic integrity. This must be done in eitherAPA or MLA formats (choice is yours).
The book and documentary are mentioned in the overview. I only have quotes from the book and documentary in the outline. The other 4 sources needed, i do not have.
