Researched Argument

For this essay, you will make an argument relevant to the problem/issue you chose for your Topic Proposal (and developed, with related research, in your Exploratory Essay and your Annotated Bibliography) and that is related to your area of study and/or a political/social issue from your home country. You should support your claim with research, reasoning, and examples. Your argument should be both credible and persuasive, with a tone and level of formality appropriate for a discerning, academic audience.

Purpose: This assignment asks you to effectively exercise the research and rhetorical skills learned throughout the course.

Research: You should demonstrate that you respect and value quality research on two accounts. Firstly, you must select sources with a high degree of credibility. You should use three sources that are scholarly/peer reviewed sources. Following that, you should use (at least two) credible online sources that you evaluate according to the criteria given in our CRAP pdf found in Moodle under MLA/Citation – Topic #3. This means that if a source is not scholarly, you need to be VERY CAREFUL. Secondly, you should incorporate your sources in a way that communicates a credible ethos. You should provide contextual information (an attributive tag/phrase) when you introduce the source (author? Place of publication?), follow MLA guidelines in in-text citations, and include a properly formatted works cited page.

Rhetorical Appeal: You should craft your argument with a specific audience in mind—who are you trying to convince? What persuasive strategies will best suit your chosen issue and your target audience? I recommend a healthy balance of logos (evidence/reasoning that demonstrates the truth of your claims) and pathos (why should anyone care about this argument/issue? How are people invested in this argument emotionally?).

Genre: Overall, our essays should follow the genre of an academic essay, which reflects the tone and style of a scholarly journal.

Audience: This will be different for each of you depending on your subject of choice and your personal/professional goals. Think demographically—age, sex, income, race/ethnicity, nationality, career, sexual preference, political affiliation, etc. Depending on your subject, one may be much more important than others.

In general, assume three things about your target audience:

a)They are unfamiliar with your subject (i.e. you will need to take some time explaining/ defining fundamental concepts).

b)They seek an argument but not one that is facile and one-dimensional without considering opposing perspectives.

c)They are well-educated, critical readers (meaning they will be very sensitive to hints of overly personal bias, logical fallacies, and/or evidence of poor research).

Sources: Your essay should include at least five sources. Three of your sources should be scholarly/peer reviewed sources, with the remaining sources being credible online sources. Class assignments (annotated bibliographies) and activities (online source credibility) throughout the semester will help students clarify these types of sources. Keep in mind that this is called a researched argument. And, I really can’t say it enough—All of your sources must be of high degree credibility according to C.R.A.P. source evaluation test standards found in the PDF document in Moodle.

Plagiarism: Because this essay requires heavy research along with creative critical thinking on your part, beware of misuse/abuse of outside sources. REMEMBER: Paraphrasing of a source still requires a citation. If you have questions, please ask me before turning in your assignment. In general, whenever in doubt, include a citation.

Organization: This essay will follow a classical argument framework. An organizational map of your argument can be found in your “Researched Argument Rubric” – under topic #7 – Assignment Sheets, Rubric, Student Samples. See the first 5 points under Content/Organization in your rubric for how to organize your essay. You will be expected to provide an outline as part of your drafting process to reflect evidence of an effective pattern to your essay. Keep in mind that you may have to do some “foundation building” at the beginning of your essay—perhaps give a brief history of your issue or define important terms/concepts that are pivotal to understanding your argument.

Thesis: Because you will be presenting your subject as complex, you may take up to two sentences to provide readers a clear “map” of your paper in your thesis statement. (which should be included at the end of your introductory paragraph. REMEMBER: You are arguing for a particular perspective but are endeavoring to get readers to consider perspectives/angles that they may not have thought of before.

Formatting and Requirements

Must be 5 to 7 pages using MLA formatting (and no more, I stop reading after 7 pages)

Must cite at least three scholarly sources (published in a scholarly, peer-reviewed journal) and at least two more credible online sources. Note: all of your sources can be peer reviewed if you so choose

Must conform to MLA format for an Academic Essay – See Purdue Owl — (Must use Times New Roman, 12-point font with 1’’ margins, title, heading, numbered pages, in-text citations, works cited page)

In-text MLA citations: See “Quote Integration” ppt under MLA/Citation – Topic #3 for how to integrate your quotes/secondary source material. Remember to use attributive tags/phrases to introduce your source material – who made the statement, where it was written, why it was important to the point you are making etc — (E.g. According to Mahmed Azir, an expert of Islamic studies at the American University in Cairo, “20 % of…. “(340).)

Works Cited Page: Include all of the secondary sources (you should have at least 5 and no more than 8) that you have used inside your essay using MLA Formatting (Hanging indentations, Alphabetic order by the author’s last name, double spacing etc.)

My Pet Peeves:

1.Integrate the name and author of sources into the sentence! See above example.

2.Do not use first person “I/my” and second person “you.” That was OK in your topic proposal, but in this assignment we should use a more academic, less informal tone.

3.Do not mention “researchers” or “studies” without a source.

4.Do not make frequent proofreading errors.
