IDS CAPSTONE PORTFOLIO (50 POINTS POSSIBLE) Further instructions for formatting and submission are included in the assignment descriptions in Canvas. The portfolio consists of 5 sections, with first drafts to be completed in the order below and submitted by the dates indicated in the syllabus and CANVAS. Feedback will be given on drafts of the first three sections, but a final grade won’t be assigned until the final draft of the entire portfolio. 1) REFLECT ON YOUR COURSES AND EXPERIENCES (10 points): Begin this section by identifying a career field or specific problem or issue that interests you. Then prepare a detailed description of at least 3 college courses and 2 experiences (employment, volunteering, participation in a cultural/educational event, etc.) and explain how they might relate to that field (It doesn’t have to be an obvious or direct connection. The important thing is that you explain how you see the connection). Finally, in one sentence and as specifically as you can, state a problem or issue in that field you are motivated to help solve. Each description of each course and experience should be roughly 50 words. 2) IDENTIFY AND EXPLORE YOUR COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE (10 points): Begin this section with the statement of the problem you wish to solve as you set it out in the first section, and then specifically describe a community of practitioners involved in solving it. This section of the portfolio must consist of at least 3 individual entries, with at least one each from the local (city or state), national, and international levels. Each entry must be at least 50 words and include a citation to the website or other sources of information included in that entry. Each entry should address the following: a. Identify a specific individual or organization engaged in your field. Examples of these would be university professors or other key researchers working in your area of interest; academic, professional, civic/nonprofit associations that focus their efforts on your area of interest (things like conferences, advocacy, education, and training), or relevant government agencies in your field. Groups affected by or having a stake in the problem you hope to solve could also be part of your community of practice (for example youth and parents involved in school or workforce issues, citizens impacted by neighborhood issues, etc.) b. Identify and describe at least one specific example of an issue, an advocacy or research strategy, best practice, workplace challenge or some other initiative currently being pursued by the individual or organization you have identified. c. Explain how what you write in your entry is relevant to your problem statement. For an internationally based organization or individual be sure to say what the international perspective adds to your portfolio. 3) WRITE AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY (10 points): Begin this section with the statement of the problem you wish to solve and then prepare an annotated bibliography of at least three high quality sources that you have read in your college coursework or identified in specific research for this portfolio which relates each entry to the problem. Each entry should start with a complete bibliographic citation including all relevant publication information and a link to the source if it is available electronically. High-quality sources include peer-reviewed articles and books from UNO library-hosted databases or other academic sources; reports from government, non-governmental and non-profit associations, and research institutes; and reports from well-regarded professional associations in the relevant career field. (For more advice on locating quality sources, see the recommended reading from The Craft of Research). Your community of practice can also be a good place to locate quality sources. Each annotation should be roughly 50 words. 4) WRITE A STATEMENT OF PURPOSE THAT PULLS TOGETHER THE ELEMENTS OF YOUR PORTFOLIO (10 points): Working from the first four sections of the portfolio write a statement of interest that is at least 1,000 words long that includes an explanation of your interest in the problem, ways practitioners in the field approach that specific issue, and a specific next step for how you would like to get involved in the work. Examples of specific action steps include an initiative to implement your solution and/or further education, research, volunteering, or employment to engage more deeply with the field. This statement does not need to be addressed to a specific individual but imagine that you are addressing someone in your community of practice about the problem that interests you. 5) DRAFT A VERSION OF YOUR RESUME THAT ALIGNS WITH YOUR STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: (10 points): This should be a professional resume. Any format is acceptable, but his version must include at the top a statement of career/professional interest that aligns with the central goals of your statement of purpose, and a listing (in reverse chronological order, starting with the most recent) of your education and experience that integrates relevant information from your portfolio in a way that supports your statement of career/professional interest.
