GIS4043 students need to find one research article with GIS application in the area of your expertise. Note that the article must be from academic journals. Please go to USF Library (https://lib.usf.edu/) to search the relevant articles. For instance, my research interest is childhood obesity with GIS. I typed “GIS childhood obesity” in the search box. For the original research article you read, it is optional to submit it on Canvas. Student Name GIS 4043 Review Summary The article “Planning and selection of green roofs in large urban areas. Application to Madrid metropolitan area” by Velazquez et al. (2018) presents a new methodology for identifying optimal locations for urban green roofs based upon criteria that consider ecological connectivity and human wellbeing. This methodology was applied in Madrid, Spain, and the authors identified five neighborhoods that were ideal for green roof installation and then proceeded to identify the individual roofs within those neighborhoods that were best suited for green roof installation. GIS was an essential component of the methodology because 1) it allowed researchers to layer data that corresponded to each of the components that they were considering and 2) it allowed researchers to select the buildings that were most appropriate for green roof installation based building criteria and proximity to urban trees and green areas. The article is interesting because it shows how GIS technology can be leveraged to design neighborhoods that promote positive outcomes for both human wellbeing and biodiversity. The methodology was divided into two different phases. First, Velazquez et al. (2018) applied a multi-criteria assessment to find the neighborhoods that would most benefit from green roofs and then presented the data for each criterion in raster format. The researchers then applied a weighted score system to identify five priority neighborhoods for green roofs. In the second phase, individual buildings ideal for green roof installation were identified by gathering Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) and Digital Terrain Model (DTM) data for the variables building height, roof incline, nearby urban trees, and structural connectivity. The data were presented in raster format, and elements irrelevant to the study were removed from the visualization (e.g. buildings with roofs that were too steeply inclined). The benefit of this methodology is that the raster format allowed them to clearly present continuous data. The final product — maps that identify ideal locations for green roofs in 5 neighborhoods — is something that can easily be used by city officials to improve local planning, and, consequently, human health and environmental outcomes. These methods were appropriate for the study that was being conducted, and no cons of this methodology are evident. The only ways I have identified that the researchers could have improved their use of GIS would be to clean up some of the graphics so as to eliminate ambiguity with the labels and to convert the final product into an interactive tool. Overall, the article showed an excellent use of GIS in planning, and it has increased my understanding of how GIS can be applied to green infrastructure planning and beyond. The article describes just one of the many ways the GIS can be used in the planning field; however, GIS has applications in many other fields– ranging from public health to archaeology and beyond.
