Media element of a research project
You will create a piece of media to share about what you have learned in the research project. Your creation should hit the main points of your project. You should briefly explain the topic/issue, review the relevant literature (both peer-reviewed & popular press), discuss your recommendations, & conclude the project. This is your opportunity to share your knowledge & creativity.
Your Media Element
Take this opportunity to be creative! You get to decide what type of media you want to produce for this part of the project. You should choose a type of media that is something that you could/would see shared on social media. Some options for media include:
A newspaper (or a newspaper article) or magazine (or a magazine article or zine)
A YouTube, TikTok, or other type of video
- A recorded presentation (something like a TedTalk, not you reading your entire paper aloud)
- A blog or blog article/entry
- A song/album
A podcast
- An interactive game that others can play
- An advertising or PR campaign
- Feel free to come up with other ideas that would fit into the social media communication category!
- Again, these are just suggestions for types of media you might create. Anything that would fit into the category & would allow you to convey the information could be used. If you’re not sure if an idea is okay, please ask!
- The Fine Print
- The media you create must focus on the overall goals of the project. While you are obviously welcome to include your perceptions & opinions as well, this media piece should not ONLY include those things. This is not you talking or writing at random about topic you’ve chosen. Your goal is to translate the research you have gathered.
Remember that you will still need to explain some of these things. Because this is practice in translating the research for a broader audience (who would be accessing your work via social media), you should not assume that the reader/watcher knows about the topic or the research. Explain any relevant theories, etc.
You are NOT REQUIRED to share the media you create with the broader public, but it does need to be able to be shared with your classmates. (For example, if you decided to make a YouTube video, you could upload it as “unlisted” and only share the link with the class.) If you want to share what you create broadly, you can, but you are not required to do so. Once the term is over, you are welcome to delete whatever media you have created.
Do not save or share your classmates work with others outside the class. In other words, you can do whatever you wish with your own work. However it is not okay to share the work of others without their permission.
- Remember that this will be shared with others in the class. Just like any other producer of mass media, you should think about your audience. What will resonate with them? What will make sense? How can you best convey the information? What do you need to be aware of when it comes to your audience? You should also choose a type of media that you are comfortable creating. For example, if you do not want to be on camera, then a YouTube video would not be a good choice. No one is required to create using a type of media that makes them uncomfortable.
Please be aware that racist, sexist, homophobic, ageist, ableist, or content that otherwise violates our college’s code of conduct & our course etiquette rules will be removed immediately & will not receive credit. We can absolutely talk about these topics as they relate to social media & relationships, where they are being studied in the research, etc. However, any harassment, discrimination, etc. will not be tolerated.
- What you create must be a piece of media. Obviously, you are not going to create a blockbuster movie with a 10 million dollar budget in the remaining weeks of this class. (In fact, you are not required to spend any money to do this project!) However, this should still be a piece of media that you thoughtfully construct to share your work with your classmates. Your media creation should be reasonably professional in nature.
- You are welcome to involve others in your media creation, but please make sure that they have consented to participate. For example, you could interview someone or have someone act in a video with you as long as they agree to be a part of the project & understand that it will be shared with others. Any kind of “candid camera” situation or something that might embarrass your other participations is not okay.
- Your media creation can be from whatever perspective you wish, as long as it accomplishes the goals of the project. If you want to write a script of a fictional television show about your topic & recruit your friends/family to act in it with you, feel free! If you want to create your own magazine or newspaper that deals with your topic, great! If you would rather make a video or TikTok where you talk to the viewer about your topic, wonderful! This can be as serious or as playful as you wish, but it must accomplish the goal of being a thoughtful, informed sharing of what you learned in the project.
Anything you quote or paraphrase in your media piece must be appropriately cited in the media you create (whether that is done verbally or in writing). No plagiarism!
- It is up to you to go seek out the information & resources you need to figure out how to create your media. If you want to make a podcast but do not know how, it’s going to be up to you to look up resources & learn about how to do it (for example). Want to use Kahoot! to make an online game? Great, but you’ll need to learn how to use the interface & share it with others. I am happy to help you locate resources & provide advice, but I will not do it for you.
