The Getty Villa in Los Angeles
The Getty Villa in Los Angeles
Winston Churchill once said: “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” Have you ever wondered where did the inspiration for building some of the most iconic architectural structures in Los Angeles come from?
This long essay assignment asks you to write a comparison between an Ancient Greek/Roman building and American building in Los Angeles that has been inspired by the Ancient Greek/Roman architectural tradition. Write a 2 page paper, Times New Roman font. You do not need to do outside research, although you can. Links with information are provided below.
Choose one Ancient Greece or Roman building from the list below and pair it with one building in Los Angeles. Then write a compare and contrast answer. How are the building similar? How are they different? Be sure to discuss function. How is each building used? Who uses it? What are the materials? Architectural details? Organization of the building?
As with the other compare and contrast essays, you must discuss the works together. So if you talk about the material of one building, you need to talk about the material of the other building right after.

Focusing on the period and styles covered by this unit, identify an artist (if known) and a particular visual work of art that inspire you, not just visually but intellectually. Make sure that when you are referencing the sources of your research you properly quote, paraphrase, and provide a citation for your sources. You should choose an artwork discussed in the introductory video, this week’s readings or those that you can find when you click on the Smart History links provided in this discussion. Your post should be as original as possible.
Try to describe, analyze, interpret and evaluate the chosen artwork to the best of your abilities, using knowledge you have acquired since the beginning of the course, and using WRITING AN ART CRITIQUE and VISUAL ANALYSIS GUIDELINES documents provided under Module 2.
Make sure to address the following question:
How does the piece you chose express the features of its style movement or period? Pay special attention to the DESCRIPTION of the artwork (How would you describe it in detail to someone who cannot see it?).
Ensure that your choice was created in the time frame identified here (Etruscan, and Ancient Rome, from Republic to the Decline of the Roman Empire).
Respond to classmates’ posts that have focused on different works of art than the one you chose. Compare your chosen work with theirs. You have to respond to at least two of your peers and me for a full credit. All your posts should be as substantive and substantial as possible.
For a full credit: Initial post (at least 200 words in length) should be submitted by Thursday evening, or no later than on Friday evening. You have to respond to at least two of your peers and me (if you have been asked a question) with substantive and substantial posts (100-200 words) by Sunday evening.
Include images and used sources.
