Schilb and Clifford have grouped literary works sharing similar issues located in Part II of the Table of Contents, under each theme for Chapters 9-13. You must select a pair of literary works that are grouped under an issue before the Literature and Current Issues options underneath each theme. For example on page xxix in the Table of Contents, under the Families theme, you will see Mothers and Daughters, Siblings in Conflict, Returning Home from War all the way to Gay and Lesbians in Families, which ends the options because the next issue concerns the Essay #3 option. Under each issue, Schilb and Clifford have provided two or more selections that focus on a particular issue. Select two from the options. Then, read the thematic section introduction and the issue introduction prior to completing the Before You Read. Study each selection and answer the TAT’s following. Decide which text will serve as your primary text.
For essay #4, you will follow the strategies for a Comparative Argument beginning on page 130. As Schilb and Clifford suggest, you will develop a Weighted Comparison, which is an argument chiefly concerned with one text more than the other as explained in Chapter 5 on page 133. They provide Jeremy’s student model as a guide beginning on page 134 for you to follow.
In preparation for drafting Essay #4 you must complete Quizzes 10-12. They work in conjunction with each other to prepare you for writing the essay, which is why they have the same due date. Remember, due dates are flexible, so take time to thoroughly explore the parameters of each question. 2. Explain one (1) philosophical idea or action in the primary selection. Examine one philosophical idea or action from a particular scene or stanza, which differs among genres. For a poem, punctuation often plans a role in determining a scene, where as plot devices designate scenes in short fiction which could comprise one or more paragraphs.
3. Judge the views you assume the author is promoting in this particular scene. Explain whether this idea or action is morally good or bad.
