internal stake holders might include nurses and nursing directors. Nurses are the healthcare professionals that are directly involved in labor and delivery care. They are responsible for implementing any changes in protocols or procedures related to postpartum hemorrhage. Their support is crucial for successful implementation of dirlls and skills regarding the management of PPH, as they will be the ones utilizing these drills in real-life scenarios. The medical director of labor and deliver is responsible for overseeing the delivery of care in the labor and delivery setting. She plays a key role in approving and implementing changes to education and training programs. Her support is essential to allocate resources, such as time and funding, for implementing postpartum hemorrhage drills and skills training effectively.
External stakeholders in labor and delivery education changes might include the provider groups that are accredited to deliver at this specific hospital, as well as patient advocacy groups. These physicians and providers are involved in managing high-risk pregnancies and complications during labor and delivery. Their support is vital as they provide medical expertise and guidance on best practices for managing postpartum hemorrhage. Additionally, they may participate in the drills themselves or provide feedback on the training curriculum. Advocacy groups represent the interests and concerns of expectant mothers and families. Their support is important to ensure that changes in labor and delivery education prioritize patient safety and positive birth outcomes. Involving patient advocacy groups can also help in gaining community trust and support for the proposed changes.
One unique strength that would help a nurse secure support from stakeholders and develop effective interprofessional relationships in this context is strong communication skills. Effective communication is essential for conveying the importance and benefits of postpartum hemorrhage drills and skills training to internal stakeholders like nurses and midwives, as well as external stakeholders like obstetricians and patient advocacy groups. By clearly articulating the goals, methods, and potential outcomes of the proposed changes, the nurse can build trust and collaboration among all stakeholders, fostering a shared commitment to improving patient safety and outcomes in labor and delivery care. Stakeholder engagement is now widely acknowledged as an essential aspect of guideline development and implementation (Petkovic et al., 2020). Although frameworks for guideline development emphasize the importance of involving those likely impacted by the recommendations, there remains a lack of consensus on practical approaches for achieving this (Petkovic et al., 202) ]. An international collaboration comprising researchers, patient partners, and various stakeholders is collaborating to develop a comprehensive checklist outlining the when and how of involving stakeholders in health guideline development (Petkovic et al., 2023). Health guidelines encompass clinical practice guidelines, instrumental in guiding healthcare providers’ treatment decisions for various health conditions(Petkovic et al., 2023). During the checklist’s development, the team pinpointed several critical areas for focus, including: (1) Defining roles and responsibilities across different settings, (2) Identifying and selecting stakeholders, (3) Determining levels of engagement, (4) Evaluating the effectiveness of engagement, (5) Ensuring documentation and transparency throughout the process, and (6) Managing conflicts of interest effectively(Petkovic et al., 2023).
