As a nurse, I have found several nursing theories to be highly applicable in my practice, each contributing valuable insights into patient care and the nurse-patient relationship. Among the nursing theories that resonate most with my practice are:

Hildegard Peplau’s Theory of Interpersonal Relations: Peplau’s theory emphasizes the importance of the nurse-patient relationship in promoting healing and facilitating the patient’s journey towards improved health outcomes. In my practice, I strive to establish therapeutic relationships with patients based on trust, empathy, and collaboration. I recognize the significance of active listening, effective communication, and emotional support in fostering positive nurse-patient interactions.

1. Throughout my nursing education and practice, I have come across various nursing theories that have shaped my understanding and approach toward patient care. However, there are a few theories that I find more applicable in my practice, specifically Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring and Hildegard Peplau’s Interpersonal Relations Theory. In this self-reflection, I will summarize these theories and discuss their relevance in my nursing practice.

Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring emphasizes the importance of human connection and caring relationships in promoting health and well-being. This theory resonates with me, as I strongly believe that providing holistic and compassionate care is crucial in achieving optimal patient outcomes. According to Watson, caring involves a deep understanding of the patient’s values, beliefs, and needs, which guides the nurse in delivering individualized care. In my practice, I have experienced how taking the time to listen and connect with my patients has positively impacted their healing process. Through this theory, I have also learned the importance of self-care as a nurse, as we cannot effectively care for others if we are not taking care of ourselves.
