Philosophy of Sport Final Paper Description:
Philosophy of Sport Final Paper Description:
In detail, discuss your philosophy of sport.
Why should you develop your own philosophy? One’s
Philosophy of Sport provides insights into one’s view regarding the true meaning and actions of
sport and how sport contributes to our lives. Developing a philosophy of sport view offers
guidance when addressing topics related to sport. A philosophy of sports enables development
and clarification of beliefs and values that guide your behaviors, aids in decision-making, and
helps determine goals, objectives and methods of instruction and evaluation used in physical
education and sport programs.
Although there are many literary ways to express philosophical ideas, I would like you to stick to
writing a traditional “position” paper. This is the most basic, straightforward approach, which
involves taking a stand on important issues and defending them.
What should be included in your paper? The topics outlined below should be included in
your paper. Most if not all of these topics were addressed either in your journal entries or your
blogs entries throughout the semester. There is no right or wrong answer. Most everyone will
have a different view and/or opinion. However, you must support your stance (provide an
explanation or insight as to why you feel the way you do). Consistent journaling will be part of
the final paper grade.
YOU MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
1. Your definition of sport.
2. The philosophy (ies) of sport in which you subscribe. Thus, what is your philosophical
stance on sports?
3. Based on your philosophy, describe the goals of sport.
4. Explain factors that have influenced your philosophy of sport.
Topics for consideration and discussion: (You may use your Blog & Journal entries for
guidance, actually it is encouraged.) YOU MAY CHOOSE 5 TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION TO

Formatting Your Paper: How should your essay look?
Your paper should be written in paragraph form. There is no length requirement.
However, you should address 5 of the topics listed above and defend your stance. I
encourage you to use your Blog & Journal entries for guidance.
1. Opening Paragraph
a. Explain the purpose and plan of your essay. What are you writing about and
why?
b. Thesis statement, a simple statement of your position on the main issue that your
essay will discuss. (your main philosophy (ies) of sport and how it guides your
decisions)
c. A definition of “sport” or “game” or any critical terms used in your work. You may
use a definition from the authors of our text or other supplemental readings with
proper citation or you may use your own with a proper argument supporting your
claim.
d. Short introduction of the 5 topics selected.
2. The Body of the Paper
a. An explanation of the views you are discussing – Topics listed above
i. It is essential that your explanation of these views be
clear, concise, fair, and accurate. The clarity of your
explanation often reveals how well you have
understood the view you are explaining.
ii. A good summary emphasizes the main points of your
and the reasoning behind it
iii. Paraphrasing and quotation may be helpful here, but
cannot be used as a substitute for explaining the ideas
in your own words. All quotations must be thoroughly
explained and cited.
b. An explanation of your own view
i. This may involve explaining any words which might be misunderstood.

ii. It may also involve a comparison of your view with those of others,
especially concerning any different assumptions you make, different
implications of your views, etc. (Why you have these beliefs)
c. A defense of your position
i. This is not just an explanation of why you believe what you believe, but
provides good reasons for believing it. (Support your stance with an
example or evidence)
ii. If your reasons would not convince your roommate, is that because your
roommate is a blockhead or because your reasons are lousy ones? If your
reasons are lousy, is this view really worth believing?
d. Should you do outside research? NO (but you may)
i. None required. (You do not need to find articles or journals to support
your views, but your views must be supported in some way, maybe
examples.)
ii. If you decide to use an outside source: Any use of outside
sources must be documented
iii. What documentation is required for quotations?
1. All quotations from the texts should be followed by the page
number(s) in parentheses
2. Quotations or references to other sources should include full
bibliographical information (author, title, publisher, page #),
preferably in a footnote or endnote.
iv. Plagiarism is not acceptable and will receive little sympathy. If caught,
you will fail this assignment and possibly the course and will be reported
for administrative action. Plagiarism includes:
1. Using others ideas without
credit; even when paraphrasing
(or putting the idea in your own
words you must reference the
information)
2. Paraphrasing by changing a few
word (without referencing the
idea).
3. Conclusion Paragraph
a. Reiterate your position. (your philosophy and
how it guides your decisions)
b. Closing remarks as to sum up your philosophy of sport, especially the topics
addressed.
