coping with stress
To the degree that you feel comfortable, please share some of your stressors and how you are trying to cope with them. Did you learn anything in the section on “coping with stress” that you think might work for you?
Peer 1: I think the main stressors I deal with at this point in life are school, career and the future. I don’t think I am using any specific methods to reduce stress currently. I am sure I do things for myself that do reduce stress, but I am not actively doing anything. After listening to the lecture and reading this chapter I think I most often attempt to address the situation head on with problem-focused coping but then eventually get stressed out or overwhelmed by it. Slowly I turn to avoiding the problem until I HAVE to face it with emotion-focused coping. Which ultimately stresses me out more and I turn back to facing the problem head on. It’s a vicious cycle haha. In the past I have utilized relaxation methods to decrease stress. It is most helpful to really dive into self-care, a hobby, or even a show that I enjoy, giving my brain some “off” time and recoup before facing the stressor again. I feel like the things discussed in the “coping with stress” section I already knew but don’t use. So, it really reaffirmed that I need to work on the problem and take a break from it before letting myself get overwhelmed by it so that I don’t try to avoid it.
Peer 2: Some stressors I deal with daily are school, work, and family. I feel overwhelmed with schoolwork and managing my time between work and family. I get overwhelmed with the amount of house work there is or wanting to spend time with my son, but feel like there is never enough time. I have learned that sometimes I need to just “let go” and accept that my house does not always need to be clean and some things are able to wait so that I am able to focus on my son or school work instead. However, this isn’t something I am able to cope with easily as it often triggers my anxiety. So I am currently trying to create a balance between the three. I motivate myself by reminding myself that I will be graduating in May and that I am almost at the finish line. I know I can do it!
Peer 3: Like many others here, I am also facing challenges in balancing school, work, personal life, and finding time for activities that recharge me. This has been a struggle for me over the past few months, and I often feel like I am in survival mode. It can be tough to show up fully at work, complete assignments on time, manage daily tasks, and still find time to rest. I have been trying to incorporate short breaks between tasks, eat healthy meals, maintain positive thoughts, and not feel guilty about taking time to socialize with friends occasionally. During stressful times, I find it can be difficult to engage in self-care practices when all you want to do is shut down mentally. However, self-care is crucial during challenging periods. This course has helped me recognize the importance of caring for both the mind and body, especially when discussing topics like stressors. I am grateful for the opportunity to reflect on stressors in our lives as students. I hope everyone can find ways to manage their stress and navigate life more peacefully.
