Adapted from PPD1 Mock Job Application assignment and PPD3 Quest 10 by Katherine Leopold, UoG Question 1 Why do you think you are suitable for this role? Briefly outline your relevant skills and experience and how they are relevant to the role. (200 words) Helpful notes • Be systematic when approaching questions like this. Have you answered all of the points that the employer has mentioned in their job spec? Do not assume that they will make the right assumptions about your skills and experience unless you tell them exactly what you want them to know. • The employer has asked you to show how your skills and experience are relevant to the role so with each example you test it to see whether you have shown how it will benefit the employer. • Note that they have focused on skills and experiences not character attributes; for example, saying you are ‘organized’ with no example to back up how you can prove this will not score you full marks. Saying something about how you have developed organizational skills through successfully managing a busy workload and then explaining why this is relevant to the role would be much stronger. • Watch your word count – there is no space for waffle or using long-winded phrases, for example ‘in addition to’ v.s. ‘also’. • Make sure your answers are typo free, especially if you are saying you have a good eye for detail ! Adapted from PPD1 Mock Job Application assignment and PPD3 Quest 10 by Katherine Leopold, UoG Question 2 Tell us about a time when you worked in a team. What was your role and what did you achieve? (200 words) Helpful notes • Set out the context of the example clearly. Try and use as recent an example as possible. Implement the CAR model to your answer: • Make it clear what the objective of the team was and the size of the team in the ‘C’ – ‘Context’ part of your answer. • ‘A’ – ‘Action’: talk about what YOU did, YOUR responsibilities not just what the team was doing. You can mention the other members but the focus of the answer is your work and the impact of that. • ‘R’ – ‘Results’: what did the team achieve and how were you part of that? If it is a measurable achievement, like a target reached or a grade awarded, reflect on that as part of the answer. • Remember that examples can be from any area of your life, professional, academic, a sport, a hobby, etc. Adapted from PPD1 Mock Job Application assignment and PPD3 Quest 10 by Katherine Leopold, UoG Question 3 Describe a situation where you did not achieve the outcome you wanted. How did you handle the situation and what would you do differently? (200 words) Helpful notes • This is not a ‘trick question’! One of the reasons that employers ask this sort of question is to find out how you cope when things do not go as they should have done. Something that happens in professional workplaces and when it happens companies need people who are resilient and flexible to deal with those situations. • Once you have described the situation in the ‘C’ – Context, remember that the question is asking you to focus on what you did and what you would do differently in the ‘A’ – Actions. What did you learn? What did you do well? go into the ‘R’ – Results. Adapted from PPD1 Mock Job Application assignment and PPD3 Quest 10 by Katherine Leopold, UoG
